CyberSecJobs.com Releases Industry Survey on the Benefits of Volunteering

FALLS CHURCH, VA (November 26, 2018) – CyberSecJobs.com, a veteran-owned cyber security career site and job fair company, conducted a global survey among professionals who spend time volunteering at industry conferences and other activities in the community. Assisted by an international network of security conferences including Security BSides, HackInParis, and HackWestCon, the survey studied community volunteer efforts, employer support of volunteering, and how volunteering contributes to the development of professional skills.

“As an active participant in the industry, we continually seek ways to support the unique needs of the defense, intelligence, and cyber security communities,” says Kathleen Smith, CMO, ClearedJobs.Net and CyberSecJobs.com. “This survey is yet another tool we’ve created to provide job seekers with information that will impact their careers and also to help employers retain and recruit the best talent.”

Today’s professionals juggle demanding schedules of work and personal obligations, yet many, if not most, conferences and programs in the security cleared and cyber security communities are completely volunteer run. Over 55% of survey respondents have been volunteering more than four years and more than 50% give at least eight hours of their time per month.

This demonstrated level of volunteer commitment reflects the value that volunteers find in their efforts. Spending just a few hours a month as a volunteer has been shown to offer substantial benefits such as learning new skills, building an industry network, and even finding a new job. The most reported skills that respondents say they take away from volunteering include teamwork, organizing, planning, and improved communication.

The survey closely examines how participation in these additional non-paid community activities affect individuals. While slightly over 50% of the respondents find volunteering stressful, 98% say they find it fulfilling. Survey respondents find the trade off worthwhile, with 94% feeling that their volunteer work has a positive impact on the industry.

Being active in the community offers benefits to both employees and employers alike. Over 82% of respondents are employed and more than 80% of those have an employer who knows they spend time volunteering and supports their efforts. Leveraging community involvement at the employer level builds the Employer Brand and aids retention and recruitment.

The findings in this industry survey provide individuals with information to understand how volunteering in one’s professional community offers personal growth opportunities and supports career advancement. Not only can job seekers volunteer to find new opportunities, but companies can also support these community efforts to recruit and enhance their talent acquisition.
