ClearedJobs.Net to Debut New Job Searching Tools Workshop at Upcoming Job Fair

March 23, 2009 Falls Church, Virginia — ClearedJobs.Net announced today a new workshop to debut at its upcoming security cleared job fair on April 9, 2009 in Tysons Corner, Virginia.  Entitled “Using Social Networks as Job Searching Tools,” this 30-minute workshop will highlight how job seekers can use popular social networks and microblogging platforms to find their next career opportunity.

“Many times job seekers will ask about social media and its role in the security cleared community,” says Kathleen Smith, Chief Marketing Officer for ClearedJobs.Net. “Much has changed over the last two years with the rapid growth of social media tools and this has impacted industries including recruiting and the intelligence community. Social media now encompasses two thirds of the total Internet time globally according to Nielsen. We believe security cleared job seekers need to get a better sense of how these tools can aid them in their job search process.”

“Just little over a year ago, recruiters would use social networks such as LinkedIn and Facebook to do cursory research on potential candidates,” adds Smith. “Today’s recruiters use these tools to post information about jobs through status updates on LinkedIn or individual fan pages on Facebook.”

What does this all mean for the security cleared candidate who has been diligently avoiding any social media for fear of invalidating their clearance? “Adapt,” says Smith. “Each security cleared professional has situational awareness about their security operation and the guidelines that are used when communicating their professional life with friends, family and co-workers. These same tools can be applied to social networking. Many will say that this will create problems for them, but if the security cleared professional is not familiar with the research and collaboration that is inherent in social networking they will not be prepared for Gov 2.0.”

The Using Social Networks as Job Searching Tools workshop, being led by local social media strategist and speaker Mayra Ruiz-McPherson, will be held twice: once from noon-12:30pm with a second showing from 2:15-2:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2009 in Tysons Corner, Virginia.  The seminar will also be available on the ClearedJobs.Net YouTube channel along with the company’s other online career support videos.

“We first met Mayra at an on-site, custom training session covering social media fundamentals for our staff,” says Smith. “Her down-to-earth delivery of an often over-hyped subject was refreshing and easy to follow. We are very excited to have her present our newUsing Social Networks as Job Searching Tools workshop to our security cleared job seekers and are confident attendees will get a lot of information mileage from the presentation.”
