Ultrafast/RF/Photonics Engineer

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an Engineer within the Ultrafast Optical & Electronic Systems Group. The group consists of a diverse team of scientists and engineers with expertise in: lasers, optics, photonics, nonlinear optics, semiconductor optics, ultrafast diagnostics, high speed / ultra-wideband RF electronics, wideband communications, photonic analog/digital conversion, digital signal processing, simulation and modeling. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Work under general direction to research and contribute to the development of advanced optical, laser, photonic, and/or electronic systems for various applications in high energy laser systems, defense, radar, communications, ultrafast sources and diagnostics, arbitrary waveform generation, sensing, and high-speed instrumentation.
- Collaborate with other team members in the design, implementation, and qualification of cutting edge R&D systems.
- Conduct experiments and/or perform end-to-end modeling of novel system designs.
- Work closely with engineers, technicians, and integration experts from LLNL and its sponsors in all aspects of system development.
- Contribute to project/program milestone completion and provide solution to problems of limited complexity using standard techniques and methodologies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Document development activities, write reports, and deliver design reviews and project briefings.
- Define and prioritize tasks and goals to ensure project needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Work independently and with teams to solve moderately complex problems that require analysis and creative use of established techniques and methods.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or other technical area or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Fundamental knowledge in one or more of the following areas: lasers, optics, photonics, nonlinear optics, semiconductor optics, ultrafast diagnostics, high-speed / ultra-wideband RF electronics, photonic analog/digital conversion, RF design, antennas, communications, digital signal processing, simulation and/or modeling.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multidisciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, document analysis, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Experience performing independent work with technical objectives, comprehensive knowledge of concepts, and ability to demonstrate full competency.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience modeling / experimentally characterizing optical systems.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
                                                      
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Experience working with ultrafast laser sources (ps-fs), fiber optic equipment, and/or high-speed RF equipment.
- Experience with Matlab, Labview.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
