Technical Writer/Editor

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Technical Editor/Writer in the Weapons Infrastructure (WI) and Laboratory Strategic Infrastructure (LSI) Programs. You will be responsible for completing a variety of complex editing and writing projects and will be expected to solve problems of varied scope and complexity associated with specific editorial projects. This position is in the Technical Information Department and will be matrixed to the WI/LSI Programs.

Essential Duties
- Serve as a project manager by defining technical communications strategies, messages, audiences, and key deliverables for a variety of projects including high-level, extensive program reviews; coordinate all aspects of development and review work of team members.
- Develop original technical content, provide writing and editing services, and/or coordinate the full spectrum of editorial and communication services (e.g. editing and writing content for reports, presentations, and web-based projects).
- Interpret complex technical information and translate into various forms of easily understandable and non-technical communications.
- Develop and implement project plans and make major commitments on large, costly, and/or difficult communication products (e.g. proposals, annual reports, presentations to technical review councils, web sites, and conference papers/proceedings).
- Coordinate complex documents/projects with multiple authors, who are often affiliated with other government, international, or commercial entities.
- Lead and evaluate the progress of multiple, simultaneous projects and results achieved; often guiding the work of other professionals. Serve as a final quality check for all production assignments through interactions with the Print Plant, designers, web site developers, or multimedia professionals on complex production jobs.
- Partner with web administrators on the development, navigation, content, and functionality of web sites; including quality assurance testing and release to production.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Bachelor’s Degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering or scientific area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in technical communications.
- Significant experience leading complex multi-functional technical communication projects and teams with multiple technical groups to translate and develop communication materials that are easily understood by business-oriented customers.
- Experience collaborating with senior managers, team members, and peers to meet organizational/programmatic objectives.
- Experience leading production and technical writing assignments and experience establishing production team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality for communication projects.
- Experience as a technical writer/editor in multiple technical communication areas.
- Experience using broad-based professional technical writing/editing skills in a wide range of scientific areas for a variety of media.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe software tools.

Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree in English, communications, or engineering; experience in infrastructure or construction engineering fields.
- Advanced researching skills to produce sophisticated publication materials.
- Understanding of advanced and emerging techniques in multimedia, web, and visualization technologies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. 


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
