Systems Administrator (Senior)


Program Overview:

NIWC LANT S2IPT supports DoD and Navy information technology to design, develop, engineer, and maintain systems that will improve customer organizational efficiency.


Position Overview:

A Software Services IPT Senior Systems Administrator provides support for application and database users with the objective of maintaining current systems and acting in a lead systems administrator role. The position requires strong customer service skills as well as systems administration capability to manage NEDC Mid-Tier systems including Solaris, UNIX, Linux and Windows environment platforms. Candidate will use internal tools for monitoring and tracking work efforts as well as Remedy IT Service Management (ITSM), or Trouble Management System (TMS) for acquiring NEDC support.


  • Demonstrates expertise of UNIX/LINUX based operating system
  • Performs system analyze and tuning for optimal server environment performance
  • Installs, configures, and maintains UNIX based operating system
  • Deploys security and other pertinent system patches on a regular basis
  • Experience with DoD security protocols and requirements - is a plus
  • Performs system failure analysis and recovery“ ensuring the consistency and integrity of the file systems
  • Installs, configures and maintains RHEL environment
  • Develops, deploys, executes and maintains all system and application scripts
  • Performs daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
  • Performs regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions
  • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary
  • Performs regular file archival and purge as necessary
  • Creates, changes, and deletes user accounts per request
  • Provides Tier III/other support per request from various constituencies
  • Investigates and troubleshoot issues
  • Coordinates and communicates with impacted constituencies
  • Applies patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities
  • Configures / adds new services as necessary
  • Upgrades and configures system software that supports GIS infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications per project or operational needs
  • Maintains operational, configuration, or other procedures
  • Performs periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning
  • Performs ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required
  • Configures CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required
  • Maintains data center environmental and monitoring equipment
  • Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice
  • Maintains/coordinates changes for connections to remote databases
  • Maintains databases to DoD standards including password changes, STIG requirements, and IAVA's
  • Monitors System Administrator email notifications and responds accordingly when action is needed
  • Enters data center support tickets as needed and coordinates with the NIWC data center support team

Requirements (education/experience/certifications):

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • CompTIA Security+ or higher Certification to satisfy DoD 8570 Cybersecurity Workforce IAT Level II requirements
  • Associate Degree and 7 years or more of experience
  • Associate degree may be substituted with 8 years’ experience
  • Scripting Language(s): sh, bash, awk and perl
  • Experienced in maintaining web application servers, websites and associated application
  • General understanding of DNS, LDAP, SNMP, User Administration 
  • Experienced with setting up and maintaining a virtualization environments
  • Working knowledge of NAS, NFS and/or SAN infrastructure 
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and completely 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and be self-motivated 
  • Understand Agile methodologies


Preferences (education/experience/certifications):

  • Active, interim, or recent DoD SECRET clearance
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or IT related field and 5 years or more experience
  • Experienced with Apache Tomcat
  • Solaris UNIX OS or CompTIA Server+ or Linux/UNIX related certificate
  • Systems Administration/System Engineer certification in Unix and Microsoft
  • Technical training in database administration
  • 5+ years of experience managing and supporting multiple databases
  • Performs database administration of Oracle databases and may provide intermittent administration support of SQL Server databases
