Systems Administrator (Junior)

Program Overview:

NIWC LANT S2IPT supports DoD and Navy information technology to design, develop, engineer, and maintain systems that will improve customer organizational efficiency.

Position Overview:

A Software Services IPT Junior Systems Administrator provides support for application and database users with the objective of maintaining current systems and assisting the lead systems administrator. The position requires strong customer service skills as well as systems administration capability to manage NEDC Mid-Tier systems including Solaris, UNIX, Linux and Windows environment platforms. Candidate will use internal tools for monitoring and tracking work efforts as well as Remedy IT Service Management (ITSM), or Trouble Management System (TMS) for acquiring NEDC support.

• Maintains and administer applications, operating systems, and hardware related to UNIX Workstation/Servers based operating systems
• Manages and administer all aspects of user account management such as password, group, and privilege management for user access across the IPT AoR
• Develops and implement documentation including policies, procedures, checklists, and guidance specific to related system
• Maintains system readiness through the implementation, administration, and management of DoD IAVAs, DoD IAVBs, MTOs, CTOs, Vulnerability Scanning and Remediation, DISA STIGs, and other related DoD policies on all related systems
• Works with engineering teams that utilize Agile/SCRUM development practices
• Participates in requirements reviews
• Provides requirements related support for testing application components, applications and systems
• Supports configuration management efforts and documentation support including, but not limited to creation and updating required documents (e.g. requirements traceability matrix, impact analysis checklists) as required using a Versioning Control System for documentation
• Communicates orally and in writing, in meetings, working groups and project reviews with representatives at all levels of organizations
• Maintains/coordinates changes for connections to remote databases
• Maintains databases to DoD standards including password changes, STIG requirements, and IAVA's
• Monitors System Administrator email notifications and responds accordingly when action is needed
• Enters data center support tickets as needed and coordinates with the NIWC data center support team

Requirements (education/experience/certifications):

• U.S. Citizenship
• CompTIA Security+ or higher Certification to satisfy DoD 8570 Cybersecurity Workforce IAT Level II requirements
• Associate Degree and 3 years of experience
• Associate degree may be substituted with 5 years’ experience
• Shows appetite and aptitude for increasing responsibility of technical decisions
• Acts as a liaison or primary point of contact for communicating with client-side technical expertise
• Helps direct technical aspect of operations related to escalated client accounts or high severity issues as they affect or confront a project or team 
• Demonstrates interest in improving the IPT's technical awareness, depth and use of technology across the business 
• Participates in the evolution of IPT level best practices, standards, and policies as it relates to systems administration

Preferences (education/experience/certifications):

• Active, interim, or recent DoD SECRET clearance
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or IT related field
• Technical training in database administration
• 5+ years of experience managing and supporting multiple databases
• Performs database administration of Oracle databases and may provide intermittent administration support of SQL Server databases
