Systems Administrator

System Administrator (SA) A System Administrator provides technical oversight of hardware and software systems. Normally a SA provides services on systems that affect a number of users. A few examples of these systems would include servers, switches, routers, and firewalls.

Duties may include but are not limited to activities such as implementing and maintaining system security and data recovery processes, providing technical support, utilizing automation tools for delivering applications, managing assets, monitoring performance, and event notifications and automating desktop support.

In addition to the technical knowledge and skills, a SA must exhibit excellent communication skills. Often working in a team environment with clients and other IT personnel, a system administrator must coordinate and communicate activities, status updates, outage notifications and schedule information.

Customer Service:
A System Administrator must provide proactive customer-oriented service. Specifically, a SA must:
  • Provide professional service within the parameters specified in the site’s service level agreement and/or that meet or exceed the customer requirements
  • Respond to assigned task orders within the time allotted in the site’s service level agreement and/or that meet or exceed the customer requirements.
  • Maintain skill set required to do job
  • Maintain an awareness of trends within the technology industry
  • Install, configure, administer and optimize servers (hardware and operating systems)
  • Working Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Active Directory
  • Understand, implement and properly maintain network directory services
  • Experience with Vmware vSphere, ESXI, Vcloud suite, Vmware vCenter
  • Experience with maintaining Enterprise Storage and backup solutions

A System Administrator’s main technology emphasis should be to:
  • Install, configure network printing devices
  • Install, configure and maintain network applications and application distribution systems
  • Ensure system security in compliance with customer policy including virus protection
  • Implement and maintain network standards and guidelines
  • Monitor system utilization including data storage management, performance metrics and service levels
  • Ensure reliable backup and recovery of necessary data
  • Develop and maintain an automated environment including reporting, event notifications and actions, software updates and service packs


The candidate must have 6 years relevant experience, OR 3 years relevant experience plus a mid-level certification and an Associate’s Degree in a Technical Discipline or related field, OR a Bachelor’s Degree in a Technical Discipline or related field.

Required Certifications:
  • ­ CompTIA’s CASP, or CISSP (must obtain within 6 months)
  • ­ Microsoft MCSE or (VCP) Vmware Certified Professional (must obtain within 6 months)

Secret Clearance required.

Physical Requirements
Sitting at desk. Phone use and PC or laptop. Filing required. May require lifting and carrying boxes of supplies or files up to 25 lbs. Other physical requirements may include directing and participating in training exercises outside the classroom.

Equipment and Machines
General office equipment, which includes: telephone, fax machine, copier, PC/laptop, and other miscellaneous office equipment.

Work assignments dependent on requirements by the client. Training and training support may be required on nights, holidays, and weekends as dictated by the published training schedule.

Other Essential Functions
Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Must be well organized with the ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously. Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Must be able to interface effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization. Grooming and dress usually business casual, but dependent on client’s standards. Must not pose a safety hazard to employees working in the same general area.
