SWDC MDST Systems Engineer Lead

The Specialized Warfighter Development Contract (SWDC) Missile Defense Space Warning Tool (MDST) team, is seeking a talented, motivated Senior Systems Engineer to support the development of the next generation of high fidelity, physics-based infrared space sensor simulations. This position is located at Schriever Air Force Base, in Colorado Springs, CO.
MDST offers a progressive, highly collaborative development environment, and is recognized as the leader in agile software development practices within the MDA. MDST fosters a culture of innovation, and encourages both individual and team growth. We use a fast paced, trunk-based development methodology supported by advanced DevOps automation technologies including continuous integration, improvement, and delivery on a modern Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 platform. MDST has collaborative, self-organized teams creating high fidelity, optimistic parallel discrete event simulators in C++ and innovative user experiences with Java FX. MDST provides opportunities to explore new technologies and innovative software best practices, and implement them within a production environment supported by a DevOps culture.
As a Senior Principal Systems Engineer on the MDST team, you will:
  • Help define the product vision
  • Work collaboratively with team members, government customers, and product users to realize that vision
  • Lead and actively participate in the software development requirements process
  • Lead and actively participate in analysis and systems engineering activities on the project
  • Support exercises, events, and training in conjunction with MDST Operations and external stakeholders
  • Actively communicate MDST capabilities, project status, special study results, and software requirements with government customers, product users, the warfighting community, and contractor management
  • Develop technical solutions to complex problems requiring ingenuity and creativity with considerable latitude in and responsibility for determining the solution
  • Mentor other team members
  • Understand and communicate MDST product line finances, to include Earned Value Management (EVM), to government customers and contractor management
  • Support and backup the MDST Product Line Lead in the management of the MDST program

What Qualifications You'll Bring:
  • 9 Years experiencewith Bachelors in Science; 7 Years experiencewith Masters; 4 Years experience with PhD in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline.

  • Experience in Operations Research methodologies, with demonstrated knowledge using analytic tools (e.g. Matlab, Python)

  • 5 year's systems engineering experience in direct support of software development, to include requirements derivation, tracking and demonstration of compliance

  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems with minimal oversight

  • An understanding of the software development lifecycle including analysis, design, code, test, integration, maintenance

  • Experience in agile software development methodologies including Scrum and Kanban

  • Experience with model Verification and Validation (V&V)

  • Experience in leading teams and projects

  • Experience with the Linux operating system

  • Experience with software development of models and simulations

  • Experience with software requirement decomposition and high-level software estimation techniques

  • Experience mentoring junior staff

  • Currently possess a DoD Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Operations Research, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or related discipline
  • Experience performing system engineering activities, including; system decomposition, OV and SV generation, conducting trade studies, interface definition studies and the derivation of interface details to requirements
  • Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • Possess an agile certification (e.g. Scrum Master, Product Owner)
  • Experience in engineering modeling and simulation systems using an optimistic parallel discrete event simulation (OP-DES) platform
  • Experience in Linux scripting (Perl, Bash, Python, etc)
  • Experience using the Satellite Took Kit (STK)
  • Knowledge/experience in User Experience (UX) design and research
  • Knowledge/experience in any of the following: missile defense systems, space-based sensor systems, Theater Event System, infrared sensors, tactical communication systems
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Currently possess a DoD TS/SCI
