Structural Engineer

We have multiple openings for Structural Engineers. You will provide structural engineering analysis and designs for facilities and nonstructural components. Projects include modifications to existing facilities, new facility design, seismic qualification of nuclear components, blast design, fall protection design, and lateral restraint of components and distribution systems. These positions are in the Project Management Office (PMO).

This position will be filled at either the TSS.3 or TSS.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties  
- Provide engineering support on single or multi-disciplinary team design projects.
- Produce complex detailed engineering structural designs, calculations and specifications; evaluate methods being used; review and stamp drawings.
- Work with Project Managers in establishing structural design scope and criteria for outside Architectural Engineering (A&E) Projects and review structural designs by consulting A&E firms for completeness and conformance to specified LLNL criteria and building codes.
- Provide engineering solutions to a diverse range of complex structural engineering issues and/or problems.
- Represent the organization in providing solutions to complex technical issues associated with specific projects.
- Mentor peers and less experienced junior engineers in structural engineering principles and practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the TSS.4 level:
- Provide preliminary sizing of structural members with limited information.
- Provide clients with pros and cons of various solutions to highly complex structural issues/problems that require in-depth analysis.
- Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for highly advanced structural topics and develop new ideas or approaches to organizational processes and procedures.

 

Qualifications   
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Registration as a Structural Engineer (SE) in the State of California, and relevant previous experience performing independent work.
- Advanced knowledge of and significant experience with fundamental concepts, techniques, practices and procedures for completing tasks or projects in structural engineering.
- Experience with the structural provisions of the latest building codes: California Building Code (CBC), International Building Code (IBC), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
- Significant experience in advanced design, alteration and construction of commercial, industrial and/or laboratory facilities.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with AutoCAD and other engineering design software, such as RISA, used to prepare design drawings and size foundations, walls, beams, slabs, etc. and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Advanced technical verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the TSS.4 level:
- Experience with DOE Orders and Standards.
- Subject matter expert knowledge of and significant experience with fundamental concepts, techniques, practices and procedures for completing tasks or projects in structural engineering.
- Experience with blast design, fall protection, seismic qualification of nuclear components, and quality assurance.

Desired qualifications   
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
- Membership in professional organizations such as ASCE/SEI.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
