Staff Scientist

Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have openings for staff scientists to conduct polymer synthesis and characterization, including mechanical and rheological analysis.  You will work in the areas of polymers including elastomers, thermosets and thermoplastics for advanced engineering. These positions are in the Advanced Materials Synthesis, and Functional Materials Synthesis Groups of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Investigate structure-property relationships with respect to new and improved polymeric materials.
- Design and perform moderately complex to complex materials characterization analyses including Gel Permeation Chromatography, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis and others.
- Assess the mechanical properties of polymeric materials with techniques such as rheometry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and/or tensile testing.
- Participate in the conception and design of new experiments to execute research to address defined problems within the scope of LLNL interests.
- Interact with a wide spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory to enhance the applications of new material synthesis.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document research and provide results for presentation within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- BS in polymer science, materials science, organic chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Broad practical experience with polymer synthesis, and rheological/mechanical polymer testing.
- Experience in synthesizing and characterizing polymers for multiple applications.
- Experience as an experimentalist with a diverse range of experience in experimental design, techniques and execution.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently on defined research projects.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to document research results, and to prepare and present proposals, papers, and reports to internal and external audiences.
- Proficient interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- MS in polymer science, materials science, organic chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field.
- Proven interest in pushing polymer materials to the forefront of advanced engineering whether for traditional or additive manufacturing.
- Ability to provide data for proposals to gain funding for either feasibility or long-term studies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is an At Will appointment. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position. If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained should funding allow.
