Staff Mechanical Engineer/ Scientist

The Test Technology Division of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) has an exciting opportunity for a promising Engineer/ Scientist to provide a key technical role in weapons effects testing and build a lasting career with ARA. We are looking for a passionate, self-directed individual with a strong background in test development, test execution, data analysis, and predictive algorithms. The candidate should have a strong desire to grow their expertise, work with government counterparts to develop test and analysis programs, and make significant contributions to division goals and planning efforts. The candidate will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic team environment with frequent client interaction that requires strong multi-tasking and communication skills. The candidate will be responsible for management of various projects and will have proven project management experience.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting planning and field testing for evaluation of weapon effects against a variety of targets. These tests are critical to the development of technologies that safeguard our nation from future threats. Testing is highly varied and includes CBRNE defeat and counter-WMD technologies. Opportunities will be provided to work with technologies related to advanced energetic materials, ground shock, cratering, thermal effects, structural response, radiation detection, chem/bio defeat, and autonomous unmanned systems.  

The candidate should have a background in Mechanical Engineering, Explosives Engineering, Physics or a related discipline. Duties will include development and testing of advanced energetic materials programs that will require problem solving and innovative solutions to meet test objectives. Test program support will require formulation of the experimental approach, development of experimental designs, successful experiment execution, data analysis, and technical reporting. Gage/sensor selection and ranging will be a key requirement for test planning and analysis. Duties will also include execution of predictive algorithms for test scoping calculations and results analysis. A strong knowledge of the explosive test environment will be required to formulate algorithm inputs and evaluate outputs to ensure that calculated results represent realistic values.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Understanding of explosives, air blast effects, and penetration
  • Experience running physics-based and/or engineering predictive models
  • Broad technical engineering/ science capabilities
  • Project management
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Signal processing and data analysis


  • Experience with field test planning and execution
  • Familiarization with gage/ sensor response and selection
  • Background in defense-related test support
  • Computer language programming skills

Essential Functions:

  •  Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance
  • US citizenship is required
  • Development and testing of advanced energetic materials and other weapons effects programs
  • Use of physics-based and engineering predictive modeling techniques

Experience Preferred

  • 5 - 10 years: Experience in supporting, planning and field testing for evaluation of weapon effects and project management experience.
Education Required
  • Bachelors or better in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Masters or better in Mechanical Engineering or related field
