Sr. Scientist/Engineer- Synthetic Biology/Materials Science

ECS is seeking a Sr. Scientist/Engineer- Synthetic Biology/Materials Science to work in our Arlington, VA office.  

Job Description:

  • The candidate will provide scientific, engineering, and technical assistance (SETA) support to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in the Biological Technologies Office (BTO). 
  • The candidate is requested to support the development and  management of current and planned programs involving synthetic biology, therapeutics, and/or materials science and engineering. 
  • Planned programs aim to develop systems, based on advanced materials, for scarce resource harvesting (e.g., water, REEs, etc.). 
  • Other planned programs aim to develop therapeutic modalities to improve readiness and performance of Warfighters. 
  • Ideal candidates will have experience in synthetic biology, therapeutics, and/or materials science/chemistry/engineering. 
  • Previous experience in providing direct support to a DARPA Program Manager in the development of a new start program, and in the subsequent support of the source selection process is preferred. 
  • Candidates should have strong technical writing skills, ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to broad audiences, digest basic and applied research across areas of biotechnology and apply to DoD capability gaps, and demonstrates a willingness to explore the scientific literature for emerging biotechnology.
  • Excellent organization, communication, and coordination skills are required.
  • Candidate must have or be able to obtain an active security clearance sufficient to allow unsupervised entrance and work within the DARPA facility.
  • Occasional travel of up to week’s duration away from DARPA HQ, Arlington, VA, may be required.

Required Skills:

  • Ph.D. in a field relevant to the support of synthetic biology or materials science
  • Experience in synthetic biology, therapeutics, and/or materials science/chemistry/engineering
  • Excellent organization, communication, and coordination.

Desired Skills:

  • Active Secret clearance at minimum
  • Previous experience in providing direct support to a DARPA Program Manager
  • Strong technical writing skills, ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to broad audiences, digest basic and applied research across areas of biotechnology and apply to DoD capability gaps, and demonstrates a willingness to explore the scientific literature for emerging biotechnology
