Sr Principal Mechanical Engr

Job Title:Principal Mechanical Engineer

Raytheon Company’s Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) Mechanical Engineering Directorate (MED) leads in mechanical hardware design, development and production of radar, sonar, torpedo and combat system equipment. The Mechanical Engineering Directorate Design and Development section of Materials Engineering uses state-of-the-art tools, processes technology, Raytheon Six Sigma principles and provides design input for materials selection and related processes.

Job Description:

  • The primary responsibility of this role is to lead a Materials and Process team in the selection and approval of materials in the design and development phase of the program.
  • Work with Design personnel in the selection and approval of materials and finishes in new designs
  • Work with limited supervision as the Materials Engineering Lead on a program, and take ownership of project to achieve schedule, financial and technical goals as assigned
  • Work with and direct technical support personnel in the use of a wide range of materials and to ensure compliance to regulation.
  • Assist in the specification of material and Quality processes
  • Write and edit standard processes and guidelines
  • Support supplier base in resolution of materials and process related issues and supplier technical assessments
  • Design and execute laboratory experiments to validate material design concepts or approaches for manufacturing
  • Coordinate validation of new materials and processes for use on existing and new products
  • Work with manufacturing product and design personnel to identify, resolve and document materials related issues and processes
  • Up to 15% travel required including some international

This positions can be located in either Andover or Tewksbury, MA

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Required Skills:

  • 8+ years of related materials engineering and compliance experience
  • Must be self motivated and possess good communication skills, especially in creating technical documents for an audience with limited technical background
  • Desire and ability to work as a team lead is essential
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Must possess a solid understanding of materials and processes
  • Must be customer focused and close out projects completely
  • Working knowledge of reading and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Must have extensive knowledge of databases and programming as well as data input and manipulation into data collection interfaces such as SharePoint, and/or Excel
  • Experience working with one or more of the following: metals, ceramics, adhesives, sealants, potting, coatings, thermoplastics and thermosets materials
  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance

Desired Skills:

  • Must be adaptable and willing to work varying assignments
  • Understanding of corrosion mitigation and controls
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/Access/Project)
  • Working knowledge of Military and Commercial Materials and Process Specifications
  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments, and statistical techniques
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and chemical test methods used on plastic materials
  • General understanding and experience with Quality specifications used in a manufacturing environment
  • Raytheon Earned Value (EV) certification
  • Raytheon R6Sigma Certification; otherwise must become R6Sigma certified within one (1) year
  • Experience working on proposals including writing Bases of Estimates (BOE’s) for costing.

  • BS in Materials Engineering or Plastics Engineering
