Sr. Opto-Mechanical Engineer

The Electrical Subsystems Directorate (ESD), EO Products and Technology Department is currently searching for a Principle Mechanical Design Engineer to work on a multi-discipline team to lead the design of opto-mechanical and EO subsystems using the CAD tool Creo (Pro/E). Responsibilities include concept development, detailed design, analysis, integration and test, and support of transition to production efforts. Additional duties may include factory production line support in the areas of root cause and corrective action and problem resolution at various suppliers. Candidate will work closely with Integrated Product Team Leads/Program Managers ensuring engineering requirements are defined, risks are managed and schedules/budgets are met. Candidate will be expected to guide team execution, while exercising responsibility in determining and meeting the technical, financial and schedule objectives of projects. The candidate will also mentor and oversee and be responsible for the work of younger team members. As a Mechanical Engineer, decisions are data driven in nature and require preparing technical justification analysis reports as well as presenting to a variety of Engineering Review Boards.

Note: This position can be a Senior Mechanical Engineer II or Principle Mechanical Engineer I based upon the applicant’s qualifications as they relate to the skills, leadership, experience and responsibility requirements of the position.


Required Skills:


U.S. Citizenship required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 8 years applicable work experience
  • Experience in opto-mechanical design and analysis of imagers, afocals, gimbals, and focus and field-of-view switching mechanisms in high shock and vibration environments
  • Mechanical aptitude to provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite Proficient in 3D CAD tools (modeling and drawing)
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Creo (modeling and drawing) 3D modeling CAD tools
  • Industry related mechanical design and documentation experience
  • Candidate is required to attain secret level clearance.

  • Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities
  • Active DoD issued security clearance

Required Education (including Major):

Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited curriculum.


This position requires the ability to obtain and hold a DoD secret security clearance.
This position requires the successful issuance, transfer or maintenance of any clearances and/or accesses necessary for the position. Non-US citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance. The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. Security clearance factors include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the US, foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security violations and drug involvement.
