Sr. Manager Mechanical Engineering - Flight Termination Systems Development Team Lead (FTSDTL)

Mechanical Subsystems Directorate has an opportunity for an independent and high energy Flight Termination Systems Development Team Lead (FTSDTL). The FTSDTL will have both a tactical and strategic focus to ensure: (1) All Flight Termination Systems have the proper architecture to achieve customer requirements in the least amount of time and cost, (2) The supply base (working with Supply Chain and directly with Suppliers) is focused on execution and on-time deliveries, (3) Composability is being fully utilized across the Product Lines, (4) Staffing of the programs are linked to the FTS Technology Pyramid and (5) The architecture of all systems (starting with the proposal) satisfy range safety requirements. The FTSDTL impacts critical decisions that drive program results including technical reputation, schedule and total cost. The FTSDTL will have direct communication with the RMS Chief Engineer, Functional Directors, Product Line Chief Engineers, Chief Technologists, Engineering Fellows, Program Managers, Supply Chain, Government Range Safety representatives as well as the customer community.

Responsibilities will include:

Lead a team of cross functional subject matter experts in the areas of Energetics, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Reliability and Test. Typical team members will be G11s to E44s.

  • Partner with CTs, IPT Leads and REAs to drive tactical execution, break down barriers and provide quick response decision making/technical review of new and existing FTS systems.
  • Engage the RMS Chief Engineer, Functional Directors, Product Line Chief Engineers, Chief Technologists, Engineering Fellows, Program Managers, Supply Chain, Government Range Safety representatives as well as the customer community.
  • Partner with Chief Technologist and Functional Department Managers to ensure adequate resources are assigned to the programs to meet RMS priorities and commitments.
  • Self-initiate engagement of the PLCEs and Program Directors to understand current and future needs/gaps
  • Balance technical rigor with reasonable technical, schedule and cost risk within program constraints in planning and resourcing.
  • Ability to direct and lead others to complete tasks as opposed to solving problems individually.
  • Ability to present explicit and appropriate level of details to senior customer and RMS leadership.
  • Instill ownership among teams to develop and execute knowledge point (KP) based plans to help the team drive critical issues to closure, as well as mitigating issues pro-actively prior to production stops and / or schedule slips.
  • Member of the Center Director’s Leadership team in developing strategy and tactics.
Required Skills:
  • 12 years of experience across the product life cycle including development, critical design, integration & qualification, manufacturing and production support activities, including leadership roles with strong technical and management background
  • Excellent proactive problem solving experience and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent and succinct communication ability in verbal, written and presentation formats; ability to understand and present appropriate information at the appropriate level of leadership.
  • Experience as an engineering lead on RMS programs through coordination of cross discipline design, analysis and test of hardware.
  • Experience working with energetics, propulsion and flight termination systems
  • Ability to see the big picture and become a change agent for the organization striving to improve ownership across all program phases.
  • Proactive problem solving experience in both hard and soft arenas
  • Ability to influence others to achieve technical and programmatic goals
  • FRACAS, Failure Review Board (FRB) and/or Failure Investigation Team (FIT) experience
  • Team thinker, player and builder

Desired Skills:
  • Experience as Chief or Deputy CE
  • Experience as a Department Manager
  • Experience as a Program IPT or SME Lead

Required Education (including Major):
B.S./B.A in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace or related engineering degree

Desired Education:

M.S. or PHD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Aerospace or related degree

Clearance:
Must have an existing DoD issued Secret Security clearance
