Space Systems - Senior Level Space Engineer

We are part of the Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems business, and the Systems Engineering Integration & Test center. Our job is to ensure that from beginning to end, our products are properly engineered.

When a program starts, our Systems Engineers define the product design requirements based on the needs of the customer. Our Design Engineers then use their skills and creativity to design innovative solutions to meet those requirements. Our Software Engineer create flawless software solutions that allow for autonomous operations in space. Following fabrication, our Integration Engineers take the individual elements of the product and physically put them together to create the most advanced imaging systems on the planet. Finally, our Test Engineers test the completed system in the most robust environmental conditions known: complete vacuum, blistering heat, severe cold, violent vibrations expected during launch, and electromagnetic conditions that would fry unprotected equipment.

Systems and Test engineering is a great place to become intimately involved in the hardware and software of space systems. Raytheon engineers literally have their hands on some of the most sophisticated imaging systems in the world. We examine the technical requirements for our products, develop plans and procedures for testing, conduct tests, and analyze test data to ensure the systems will work as intended in the brutal environment of space. We also support the on-orbit operation of our sensors from control centers located around the world. Often our products include advanced lenses, mirrors, focal plane arrays, motors, cooling systems, power supplies, processors, and loads of electronics and software. Our test engineers develop a keen understanding of high tech space products, which is a fantastic gateway to career advancement in design or management.

When a rocket vaults our products into orbit, our teams gather at the launch site and cheer our work into space with a sense of well-deserved pride and accomplishment. Soon after, the images created by our engineers and scientists begin appearing on countless sites on the internet. Our contributions are real, and make an important difference in the world.

What type of work will you be able to do at Raytheon in the SEIT organization? The specifics depend on your level of experience and interests:

Develop test strategies, plans, and requirements
Determine test equipment requirements and test configurations
Provide overall technical definition of test program activities, budgets, and schedules for complex sensor systems assembly, integration, and verification
Conduct test activities, such as tests of imaging performance, software, electromagnetic compatibility, vibration, thermal and vacuum survival
Communicate test results and recovery plans to senior management, customer representatives, and engineering teams
Lead system engineering reviews, including test readiness reviews
Lead engineering analysis of test results and resolve anomalies
Support new business development efforts through participation in proposal generation

Required Skills:

A major responsibility of our positions requires the ability to positively influence the design and test efforts of future products through involvement in the preliminary design and bid processes. A candidate who works effectively in system design, verification, and proposal support is ideal.

Specific qualifications:
  • Minimum of 6 years experience in space systems engineering and verification
  • Multidisciplinary experience in the engineering design and/or test of optics systems, including mechanical systems, software and firmware, data transfer/buses, or specialized test equipment
  • Demonstrated interest in the range of optical system engineering processes, including requirements definition, design, test planning, test execution, data analysis, and operations support
  • Experience in preparing and delivering briefings to management and customers
  • Capable of effectively working in a team environment, often under tight deadlines
  • Active interest in leveraging verification lesson-learned into product development improvements
  • Demonstrated desire to successfully pursue new challenges, improve and broaden technical skills, seek greater responsibilities, and increase individual value to the organization
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.
  • Ability to access to US only data systems

Desired Skills:
  • Experience in IV&V planning
  • Experience in systems engineering functions, including requirements development, analysis, and tracking• Knowledge of test methodologies and test requirement development
  • Knowledge of environmental test methods
  • IPTL
  • EVMS experience
  • Classified program experience
  • Ability to obtain a SSBI clearance

BS in Engineering, Sciences, or Math
