Software Engineer 6

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systemsis seeking a Software Architect 6 to support the Common Open Mission Systems Architecture (COMSA) Team inMelbourne, FL. The primary focus of this position is to plan, propose, and/or continue the development of modern Software architectures that addresses critical needs and will form the baseline for near term and beyond fleet configurations of the COMSA product. The Architect will coordinate schema understanding and proposed changes with the adopting programs. The Architect will work within Northrop Grumman, OMS, and UCI Standards. The work accomplished supports long-range strategic goals to include software optimization and affordability.
The candidate filling this role exhibits ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness while applying advanced technologies, scientific theories and concepts. The individual performs as the expert in Software architecture to lead (technically) the COMSA Software team, addressing both hardware and software concerns. This person works with other architects and gains consensus and required approvals from the customer technical reps and leadership. In addition, the candidate acts independently to uncover and resolve issues associated with the development and implementation of operational programs on already fielded systems as well as new programs/systems entering test.
The ideal candidate has an intimate knowledge of and experience in using the OMS Standards and UCI schema. In addition, he/she possesses the leadership and communications skills to be effective in a politically sensitive environment where consensus is needed in order to make progress. Toward this end, the candidate must demonstrate success in fostering and maintaining strong relationships with peers and top leadership. The candidate must exhibit poise and calm briefing directors and VPs as he/she will cultivate credibility and perform as a trusted partner.
Long term results in this role are focused on positioning COMSA with a well thought out action plan to maintain performance. All work should be accomplished as part of a collaborative environment. Direct contact and direct working relationships with key technical customer contacts is required to perform this role. Must provide technical oversight for the development of 3rd party products and have the ability to design, code, and test, as required, in an advanced development or prototype environment.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 20 years of software engineering experience, OR Master's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 18 years of software engineering experience, OR PhD in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 15 years of software engineering experience.
  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of Development lifecycles with experience across multiple iterations of the complete lifecycle as a practitioner
  • Must have architected protocols, algorithms, and/or solutions with proven maintainability and durability
  • Candidate must have knowledge of the UCI schema
  • An active in-scope DoD Secret or Top Secret level clearance required to start. Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret level clearance with special program access.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Must have experience in creating and maintaining software architecture
  • Must have been a Software participant in RCCAs for multiple programs
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to build and lead a diverse/inclusive teams with engaged team members
  • Ability to apply and/or develop technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts
  • Ability to change physical locations based upon need (including physical ability to travel)
  • Able to work in both external and internal environmental conditions
  • Must have demonstrated mentoring skills, and excellent 2-way communication skills (upward and downward)
  • Must have a fundamental working knowledge of air worthiness requirements such as DO-178 and MIL-HDBK-156
  • Candidate is an expert in Computer Science and Engineering with a history of successful problem remediation
  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems
  • A demonstrated experience in the development and rollout of Mission Software is a plus
  • Candidate is fluent in multiple programming languages,
  • Must have knowledge as an expert in at least one language.
  • Candidate must also be able to work at multiple levels of the software stack, including low-level kernel code, server-side SQL, middleware business logic, and high-level presentation layers
  • Candidate has provided pivotal technical solutions to programs during critical troubleshooting events, such as RCCAs and Flight Test
  • Architect must have demonstrated the ability to quickly review, analyze, and understand complex software systems; must have experience being able to diagnose and troubleshoot production systems
  • Teaching experience Is a plus
  • Must be able to explain CSE (Computer Science & Engineering) concepts to non-engineering individuals
  • Must have applied expertise in Assembly, C, C++, C#, Qt, COM, Java, SQL, Message Queueing, Zero Configuration, JavaScript, TypeScript, DirectX, OpenGL, CUDA, OpenCL, HPC, system timing, and/o0r analysis of software architecture and code
  • Previous experience briefing and interacting with senior customer officials and internal executive management
  • Software Lead in RCCAs for multiple programs
  • Experience in documenting best practices and revising processes (command media) to institutionalize corrective actions and best practices is a plus
  • Active, In scope DoD Top Secret or SCI clearance
  • Experience working with external partners / customers
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills to handle multiple priorities
