Ship Structural Designer

Job Description

CACI is seeking a Ship Structural Designer to work within a team of ship designers and structural engineers in our Washington, DC office, and occasionally aboard docked ships, developing drawings of structural modifications and additions to US Navy ships, primarily in support of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the Military Sealift Command (MSC), as well as reviewing and commenting on shipyard structural drawings.  You may also be called upon to train less experienced designers regarding structural drawing preparation.

What You’ll Get to Do:

  • Use knowledge of welded steel and possibly aluminum ship structural fabrication practices, NAVSEA and MSC standard drawing formats, CAD software, and well-developed drawing/writing communication skills, to prepare ship modification structural drawings to a level of detail suitable for contracting fabrication
  • Develop Mid-Ship Section and equipment foundation drawings
  • Travel to ships (up to 3 ship visits per year) to gather information such as measurements and photos
  • Mentor/direct less experienced designers
  • Possibly conduct in-house designer coordination and training sessions on a regular basis

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain a Secret Security Clearance
  • BS or BA degree or equivalent experience
  • At least 8 years of professional experience in last 12 years preparing structural drawings or working in the ship design or ship building industry
  • At least 3 years of professional experience preparing drawings of steel ship or marine structures
  • Proficient with AutoCAD 2-D or compatible CAD software
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate information clearly and concisely via drawings, utilizing US industry drafting standards
  • Ability to direct and review work of less experienced designers
  • Willingness to travel to build sites

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:

  • Active Secret Security Clearance
  • Steel or aluminum structural fabrication experience
  • Expertise using AutoCAD 2018
  • Ability to create and review 3-D CAD models
  • Good verbal (English) communication skills
  • Proficient with MS Excel and Word
  • Proficiency with MS PowerPoint
  • Ability to coordinate and train other designers
