Senior Safety Engineer

Job Description

ASRC Federal Space & Defense (AS&D), a subsidiary of ASRC Federal Holding Company, is seeking to identify a Senior Safety Engineer in anticipation of the successful award of the Launch Systems Engineering Systems Engineering & Integration (LE SE&I) II contract.

 

Locations of operation will be at Los Angeles AFB, CA, Vandenberg ABF, CA, and Cape Canaveral AFS, FL.

 

Overview:

As lead expert responsible for developing, identifying, coordinating, and implementing all aspects of safety requirements imposed by the National Ranges.

  • Provides detailed design requirements for flight termination systems, ground and vehicle safety systems and flight safety systems.
  • Prepares and approves component and system test plans, procedures, and data packages.
  • Develops, coordinates, and maintains component qualification and acceptance test databases, and ensures compliance with Range requirements.
  • Ensures proper performance and documentation of hazard, risk and requirements analyses.
  • Ensures proper preparation of ARAR's and other safety compliance documentation.
  • Develops, prepares, and presents safety plans and briefings.
  • Serve as lead engineer with other safety personnel.
  • The LSSE provides technical analysis of hazards associated with spacecraft design, aerospace ground support equipment/hardware, and facilities and processing for the Office of Space Launch (OSL).

  

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Ensures implementation of applicable Space Wing range safety requirements for SV programs, support equipment/hardware and facilities
  • Reviews and assesses Operations & Maintenance facilities and equipment work authorization requests (i.e. engineering change requests, preliminary project reviews, etc.)
  • Reviews and assesses safety data packages produced by the satellite vehicle or facility contractors.
  • Reviews and assesses procedures and plans for SV programs, launch vehicle integration, and Operations & Maintenance and other support contractors as applicable.
  • Participates in/develops tailoring of safety requirements documents per AFSPCMAN 91- 710 (or contract equivalent).
  • Conducts/supports facility readiness walk-downs prior to SV program arrival and propellant operations.
  • Reviews and assesses program/support contractor explosive procedures and site plans.
  • Attend and participate in preliminary design reviews (PDR,) critical design reviews, (CDR,) ground operations working groups, (GOWGs,) ground operations readiness reviews, (GORR), technical interchange meetings (TIM), Splinter groups, etc....in evaluation of system safety requirements for large missile, space vehicle, rocket, payload, spacecraft, pre-launch, launch, post-launch/range operations and/or recovery operations.
  • System safety hazards analysis, design, or research/development testing of ( 1) Ordnance (2) Explosives, (3) other types of munitions, (4) pyrotechnics (5) cryogenic, (6) toxic/hypergolic propellants, (7) high pressure (HP) gases, (8) radioactive materials, or (9) Other hazardous systems/components
  • Preparation and/or review and approval of hazardous processing procedures
  • Safety monitoring of hazardous operations

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent and Ten to twelve years of related experience (four years of which should be at the Senior Engineer level) of Range Safety or systems engineering experience are required.
  • Be a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Familiarity with Space Vehicle (SV) System Safety design as well as the customers Safety Review Team process
  • Working knowledge of range safety requirements EWR 127-1 or 91-710
  • Knowledge of Nuclear safety and/or ionizing/non-ionizing radiation
  • Experience working in an integrated contracting environment/team
  • Must possess an active TS/SCI
