Job Description:

The CDC is the US Government’s lead for monitoring and responding to seasonal, novel, and pandemic influenza.  The mission of the Influenza Division of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Office of Infectious Disease (OID) at the CDC is to improve global control and prevention of seasonal and novel influenza and improve pandemic preparedness and response.

Leidos is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, organized senior level candidate to manage the surveillance, effectiveness monitoring, pharmaceutical interventions and epidemiology data and reports for the CDC Influenza Division. Duties include, but are not limited to conducting research in developing and improving surveillance systems to detect and differentiate influenza and other pathogen outbreaks, conducting epidemiologic studies to determine sources of infection, and reporting on the data and results to CDC. This information will provide public health leadership with information on current and emerging immunization practices and will be used to formulate future vaccine constituent production.  Some travel, both domestic and international, may be required to support certain subtasks by on site staff. This position is contingent upon contract award.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide programmatic, analysis, and logistic support to the Influenza Division program for surveillance and research studies
  • Conduct studies of respiratory infection using statistical modeling and epidemiologic approaches to assess effectiveness of interventions, including antiviral therapy and vaccination
  • Conduct surveillance and research studies based on modeling from statistical and epidemiologic approaches to monitor circulating vaccine strains and vaccine effectiveness
  • Conduct studies and analyses of genetic factors associated with severe influenza disease and death and response to influenza vaccinations or antiviral medication
  • Develop and evaluate surveillance systems used globally
  • Evaluate data from the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) and other surveillance networks and sources
  • Conduct studies involving laboratory surveillance of data generated from serological assays, sequencing and other assays to analyze seasonal and novel human and animal influenza viruses
  • Analyze influenza surveillance data using spatiotemporal dynamics epidemiologic approaches to determine trends that can be used in making predictive decisions about prevention, treatment and control prevention, treatment and of influenza epidemics or pandemics.
  • Develop and conduct surveillance and epidemiologic studies of human, animal, and zoonotic influenza viruses and their relationships at the human-animal interface.
  • Provide accelerated analysis and evaluation of data during agency emergencies from pandemic or epidemic influenza outbreaks
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate systems for effectiveness monitoring of vaccines and antiviral drugs
  • Assess the effectiveness of prevention strategies and perform economic impact assessment of influenza prevention and control policies, in both domestic and international settings.  
  • Conduct research and analysis of policies and provide recommendations for CDC policy changes
  • Conduct project-specific site visits and technical meetings at domestic and international epidemiology sites to support analyses that guide influenza prevention and control policy

Basic Qualifications

  • Senior level epidemiologist (MS/MPH with 10+ years of experience or PhD with 7-10 years of experience) with a background in epidemiology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, public health, or other related field.
  • Experience developing protocols, reports, and presentations
  • Experience managing teams
  • Demonstrated proficiency with statistical and analysis software (e.g. SAS, R) and Microsoft Office (i.e. Access, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a Public Trust Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • CDC customer experience and knowledge of their organizational structure
  • Familiarity with WHO Collaborating Center, Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GSIRS), US Influenza Surveillance System
  • Experience interacting with state and local public health agencies and officials
