Security Personnel Specialist


Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in and initiate background investigations. 
  • Conduct fingerprinting procedures;
  • Initiate contact with personal references, employers of applicants, and appointees for use in pre-employment suitability inquiries.
  • Verify the appropriate level of background investigation being requested, and ensure all documents required for suitability processing have been completed and included in the individual files.
  • Receive telephone calls and greet visitors to the office.
  • Prepare, submit, monitor, and update computer tracking systems concerning appropriate case material.
  • Serve as a source of reference and guidance for staff members regarding the monitoring and maintenance of case-material.

Functional Responsibility: Performs security and/or intelligence services in one or more of the specialized security and/or intelligence areas. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Applying incident management, problem solving, and task performance.
  • Producing finished documentation; e.g., reports, special studies, policy and procedure development, security designs, training programs and assessments.
  • Providing research and technical support to projects.
  • Producing solutions and documentation.
  • Monitoring project tasks and schedules.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • This position requires at minimum an active Secret security clearance. Candidates who do not currently hold this level of clearance may not be considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; a combination of college and work experience or 1-3 years related Industrial Security experience may be substituted in lieu of degree
  • Must be experienced with JPAS, Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, and/or Intelligence Community processes and procedures and eQIP; familiarity with the NISPOM required
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Applications
  • Must possess excellent communication skills both oral and written

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with PIPS/JPAS, NCIC/NLETS and OPM Investigative products.
  • Experience in the application of 5CFR731 suitability guidelines.
  • Experience in responding to requests for information and searching automated systems for data
  • Ability to apply highly technical knowledge in solving complex problems and applies law, regulation, policy and procedures to the personnel security program.
  • Successful polygraph
  • Knowledge of Security Information Management Systems [SIMS] (or similar security database software)
