Research Physicist - High Pressure Physics

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have openings for physicists in the areas of fundamental and applied research in experimental high-pressure, high-temperature materials science. You will work with a team of experienced physicists and engineers to design, execute, and analyze experiments using gas guns, diamond anvil cells, lasers, x-ray facilities, and computational/numerical simulations. This position is part of the High Pressure Physics Group ( in the Physics Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Contribute to the execution and analysis of experimental studies of materials under extreme conditions. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, the following topics: equations of state, heterogeneous materials, phase transitions, high pressure reactions and kinetics, strength and failure studies, gas-gun drives, laser drives, and shock physics.
- Extend or optimize analytical and instrumental tools under direction, such as computer algorithms or experimental diagnostics.
- Participate in the High Pressure Physics Group’s ongoing experiments conducted at off-site facilities.
- Contribute to peer-reviewed scientific/technical journals and technical reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Independently design, plan, execute, and analyze experimental work.
- Perform as a technical expert on a multidisciplinary team.
- Develop and implement new models to understand the properties of novel materials at extreme conditions.  

- MS in physics, chemistry, materials science, mechanic engineering, chemical engineering, geoscience, or the related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Ability to perform research and use a scientific approach to solve problems.
- Broad experience in experimental methods and analysis.
- Ability to travel to off-site facilities to conduct experiments.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills (for example, writing reports, peer-reviewed publications, or proposals).
- Initiative and interpersonal skills to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- PhD in related field.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct advanced independent research in relevant research areas.
- Significant experience using advanced computational facilities for design and analysis of scientific research.

Desired Qualifications
- Broad to significant experience with some of the following: in-situ measurements, electronic instrumentation/circuits, oscilloscopes, triggering systems, image processing/analysis, x-ray based diagnostics; working at beamline or other large facilities, or working in a US government laboratory setting.
- Experience with comprehensive data analysis including curve fitting, non-linear fitting, numerical simulation, or machine learning, or experience writing code/scripts for data analysis and simulating results.
- Experience developing new experimental techniques or analysis methods to solve scientific challenges.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
