REF Support Lab Engineer - Bagram (Secret Clearance Required)

GDIT has an exciting opportunity for an engineer to serve on an Ex Lab team in support of one of the Rapid Equipping Force’s (REF) Ex Lab deployed in Afghanistan. Must have a current and active Secret clearance. Selected candidate will receive day-to-day guidance and tasking from the Lead Lab Engineer (Dept. of Army Civilian) in order to manage and execute mission essential projects or significant activities using the Ex Lab assets.

Primary tasks include but are not limited to: custom design work, prototyping, fabrication, testing, installing and assessment of the hardware solutions created by the Ex Lab based on urgent operational needs and guidance from the REF.  Candidate will serve as a subject matter expert in rapid product development, spiral development of technology using fully custom, modified commercial off the shelf (COTS) and government off the shelf (GOTS) items, technology design and integration, and limited production.  Duties include project management, estimating and planning, safety checks, resource planning, design, maintenance, analysis and execution of assigned projects.  Selected candidate may also perform other duties as assigned by PdM REF, Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC) Ex Lab Project Lead, and the Regional Support Center.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Engineering degree in Mechanical or Electrical engineering (M.S. degree preferred with + years of experience)
  • 3+ years of directly related experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience with rapid design and fabrication

REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Strong 3D computer-aided design using SolidWorks
  • Skilled in reverse engineering and 3D printing
  • Welding (MIG, TIG) experience
  • Low voltage electronic design and diagnostic experience
  • Demonstrated proper use of power tools, hand tools, electrical soldering, open-source micro controller (Arduino preferred) experience
  • Ability to autonomously create technical data packages (TDPs) for all projects completed using SolidWorks, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
  • Must possess strong computer skills (design software, networking, file navigation, folder structure, use of cloud based storage and local area network file systems)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to design and develop unique materiel solutions with little guidance
  • Must be able to communicate and represent REF in a professional manner in front of all levels of US Army personnel and Department of the Army Civilians
  • Able to work independently with little guidance
  • Able to work in close quarters in a small team
  • Able to thrive professionally and personally in an austere environment
  • Must be comfortable providing briefings and speaking to small groups of people
  • Able to conduct rigorous physical work indoors and outside in extreme temperatures
  • Able to lift heavy objects up to 50lbs
  • Minimum one year deployment length; at the end of each year of deployment you would receive a $12,000 bonus
  • An active U.S. Secret clearance is required
  • Valid US passport that must not expire for at least 2 years and must contain at least 4 consecutive blank pages in it for Visas

Candidate will be required to travel by various forms of transport not limited to but to include military airplanes, helicopters and combat vehicles. Candidate will also perform other duties as assigned by REF Headquarters and the CCDC Ex Lab Project Lead.

The selected individual will attend Ex Lab familiarization training (1 to 2 weeks) at the CCDC-Chemical Biological Center (APG, MD) prior to deployment. This hands-on training provides the selected engineer with training specific to the procedures and equipment function of the Ex Lab. This training allows the candidate to hit the ground running.  This training date will be coordinated with the selected candidates’ schedule.

In addition to the above training a one week attendance at the CONUS Replacement Center (CRC), Fort Bliss, TX, is required (https://www.bliss.army.mil/crc/) of all deployees. At the end of the week at CRC you will fly to Afghanistan.

Candidate will serve as a subject matter expert in rapid product development, spiral development of technology using fully custom, modified commercial off the shelf (COTS) and government off the shelf (GOTS) items, technology design and integration, and limited production. Duties include project management, estimating and planning, safety checks, resource planning, design, analysis and execution of assigned projects.
 

  • Engineer (Mechanical or Electrical Engineer preferred) for overseas assignment
  • B.S. Engineering Degree, minimum (M.S. degree preferred)
  • Extensive hands-on experience with rapid design and fabrication
  • Skills required: 3D computer-aided design (SolidWorks), computer-aided manufacturing experience (GibbsCam preferred), 3D printing, CNC milling experience, welding (MIG, TIG) experience, proper use of power tools, proper use of hand tools, electrical soldering, open-source micro controller (Arduino preferred) experience, electronic diagnostics experience
  • Ability to autonomously create technical data packages (TDPs) for all projects completed using MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. Must possess basic computer skills (file navigation, folder structure, use of cloud based storage and local area network file systems)
  • Must be able to design and develop unique solutions with little guidance
