Pulsed Power Technologist - National Ignition Facility

We have an opening for a Pulse Power Technologist.  You will provide technical support for the deployment, maintenance, and operation of pulsed power equipment in support of the experimental program at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). NIF is the world’s largest and most powerful laser that combines 192 laser beams onto a fusion target about the size of a pencil eraser.  NIF is a 24/7 operational facility which at times may require overtime or weekend work to accomplish goals.  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
 
Essential Duties
- Collaborate with Sub-System Managers to install, modify, test, analyze, troubleshoot, maintain and commission complex Pulsed Power equipment independently under minimal supervision.
- Establish circuit and/or systems parameters using advanced electronics circuitry, scientific knowledge, engineering principles, and mathematical calculations.
- Design, develop and modify circuits, software and/or systems of limited scope utilizing advanced methods of data collection, in-depth analysis/ evaluation, and reporting results.
- Acquire and analyze complex preliminary data during design or prototyping of components, systems, or equipment, identify problems, and establish or modify guidelines, techniques and procedures.
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of all pulsed power equipment and associated controls and diagnostic chassis.
- Write or interpret specifications used in crafting, maintaining, and calibrating of advanced electronic systems, chassis, or components. Develop and author procedures and manuals as well as preparation of technical reports, including daily and monthly progress reports describing technical accomplishments.
- Lead daily work activities of other technicians to provide advanced technical support by applying a complex understanding of each system, electronics theory and applications while utilizing advanced test equipment and troubleshooting methods.  This includes overseeing projects through completion which may involve interfacing with upper management and other subsystems for deployment and qualification planning.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        - Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Associate degree in an engineering technology such as electronics or equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Experience working in a large-scale manufacturing or scientific research facility operations environment with advanced level technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex problems.
- Advanced understanding and experience in electronics technology and background in both theory and design and ability to apply electronic knowledge to a breadth of complex electronic circuits and systems need to support a full life cycle from inception through commissioning and maintenance of equipment.
- Experience with complex industrial instrumentation and control systems, programmable logic controller/programmable automation controller software, to implement parameter modifications and revisions.
- Experience in safe work and business practices.
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.    
- Effective communication, interpersonal, feedback, and teamwork skills and abilities, and experience providing technical direction to others.

Desired Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of Power Conditioning Systems (PCS) and Plasma Electrode Pockets Cells Systems (PEPC).

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
