Principal Technical Writer

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems (SAS) Whole Life Engineering (WLE) is looking for an individual who is a self-starter and has extensive experience developing technical manuals for military applications. The position is located at our highly sought out Raytheon Goleta facility near beautiful Santa Barbara, California. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technical writer to work in the challenging self-protect systems field. As a member of the Electronic Warfare Self Protect Systems Whole Life Engineering team, the individual will be responsible for the development and delivery of technical manuals and technical source data used in the generation of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs).

Technical manuals will be developed for various systems in part by using engineering documentation as source data and by interfacing directly with design and test engineers. As an experienced technical writer, the individual must be able to learn how to operate and maintain complex military systems and using that knowledge along with available reference data write technical descriptions of systems and equipment, operating procedures, maintenance procedures, theory of operation, troubleshooting documentation, and generate functional diagrams. Previous experience developing technical manuals for a U.S. military customer is required.

The position requires frequent use and general knowledge of industry practices, techniques, and standards. While developing technical manuals and work products, the selected candidate will be required to develop solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity while referring to policies and practices for guidance.

Required Skills:
  • 6+ years of related work experience
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and parts lists
  • Possess 4 years of related technical writing experience for a U.S. Military customer.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-38784 and MIL-STD-87929.
  • Possess excellent technical writing skills.
  • Have a technical background as necessary to write about technical systems, read schematics, and develop fault isolation and fault reporting procedures.
  • Must be a self-starter, a quick learner, be able to work in a fast paced team environment, and be able to meet scheduled deadlines.
  • Proficiency in use of PC tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and experience working with external customer(s)
  • An excellent communicator with good presentation and writing skills
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret Security Clearance
  • US Citizenship

Desired Skills:
  • Current Secret level U.S. Security Clearance.
  • Experience working within the Military Supply System
  • Experience developing training material for the U.S. military.
  • Knowledge of EAGLE toolset and processes
  • Familiarity with Raytheon Product Document Management (PDM) system
  • Familiarity with Logistics Support Analysis Record (LSAR) associated with either MIL-STD-1388/2B and/ or DEF-STD-060.
  • EVMS Certification or equivalent
  • Experience in the preparation of CDRLS in compliance with business processes (IPDS & EVMS)
  • Six Sigma Specialist or equivalent

Required Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree

This position requires a U.S. person or the ability to obtain an Export Authorization from the appropriate government agency for non-U.S. persons.

: U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.
