Principal Technical Writer/Editor

Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is a progressive research and development company with a 30+ year legacy of providing innovative products and services to the government and private sectors. The Southeast Division has a unique opportunity for a Principal Technical Writer/Editor to support our team by playing a vital role in presenting compelling and compliant project documents in response to our contract requirements.

As a principal technical writer/editor you will work collaboratively with our technical and management subject matter experts to write documents and edit content from personnel. You will ensure our documents clearly articulate the team’s overall solution and approach, technical aspects of projects (requirements, design, testing, etc.), program management activities, risks/mitigations, etc. In this role, you will lead development of project documents for one or more projects. You will also be responsible for document formats – consistent look and feel among project documents, appropriate language use, and adherence to Microsoft Word style sheets.

A successful candidate must possess the ability to engage with technical staff and subject matter experts; capture key concepts and ideas; write in clear, concise, and persuasive language. The successful candidate will translate technical concepts into easily understandable text and graphics, rewrite/review project documents, and help implement process improvements.

Our project technical writers use a variety of software, including: MS SharePoint, Atlassian Confluence, Atlassian Jira, Adobe RoboHelp, and Adobe Acrobat Pro. Technical writers also require extensive Microsoft Word and PowerPoint knowledge, including Word style sheets. Because technical writers assist with project management documentation, they should also have be familiar with Microsoft Excel.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 7-9 years’ experience writing technical and management documentation
  • Experience managing training programs
  • Experience developing visuals (e.g., graphics, charts)
  • Expert ability to synthesize and communicate technical information in consistent, understandable language
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently
  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines
  • Active Department of Defense TS/SCI security clearance

Preferred Skills:

  • Expert level Microsoft Word and PowerPoint skills
