Principal / Sr Principal Controls and Mechanisms Engineer

The Mechanical Subsystems Directorate (MSD) is searching for a Principal Mechanical Engineer with experience in control actuators and mechanism/moving elements. The ideal candidate will have proven experience working with electro-mechanical and pneumatic/hydraulic actuation systems and associated precision mechanisms. This position will not only utilize inherent design abilities, but also require a broad, multi-disciplined, view across all elements of controls and precision mechanisms. The candidate will be responsible for developing technical solutions for a wide range of complex problems related to the entire missile product life cycle from design to manufacturing, and integration and test of various types of missile subsystems. The candidate will be able to apply sound mechanical engineering principals to solve system problems while teaming with electrical and systems engineering, and others on a cross discipline engineering team. This position is located in Sacramento, CA.

Note: This position can be a G10 (Principal Mechanical Engineer) or a G11 (Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer) based upon the applicant’s qualifications as they relate to the skills, leadership, experience and responsibility requirements of the position.

As part of a broad based mechanical systems department, presently experiencing growth opportunities, assigned responsibilities could grow to include team lead and /or major subsystem responsibilities over designated hardware on specific programs (REA or IPT Lead). This would involve responsibility to oversee all engineering issues associated with that hardware (mechanical, electrical, algorithm, software, integration, DFMA, CAIV, and any other hardware related issues) with the express purpose of assuring that the system is fully and correctly integrated both as a subsystem and as a component of the overall final assembly meeting all cost goals and schedule. As the candidate grows in learning and adapting they could also provide leadership and management support of all corrective actions, testing, transition to production, and any follow-on development efforts, as well as failure investigations required.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, eager to accept the outlined responsibilities and recognize and implement the actions required to meet them. They will be required to demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills to both internal and external customers.
