Principal Scientist

Applied Research Associates (ARA), Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Principal Scientist at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. The successful applicant have research scientist experience with a primary background in chemistry focused on Chemical Agent Resistant Coatings (CARC). This person will provide direct support to the Government lead, operating under their direction.  He/she will conduct research, assemble data, facilitate requirements definition process, participate in the development of innovative concepts, development of strategic plans, and prepare reports and presentations in support of program objectives.  This person must be able to think creatively and challenge conventional thinking over a wide variety of CARC related projects. This position requires strong analytical skills and problem solving abilities to thrive in a cross-functional setting. A successful candidate will have the following attributes:

    • Recognized expert in CARC systems
    • Deep knowledge, familiarity, and professional relationships within CARC community
    • Experience as a CARC commodity manager
    • Research scientist background within DoD
    • Business development acumen


Required Skills:

    • Create clear and concise presentations to support complex organizational and systems integration relationships within the DoD
    • Expertise in formulation of camouflage coating systems
    • Comprehensive knowledge of CARC specifications, physical test methods and analytical analysis of coating systems
    • Knowledge of DOD ground vehicles, vertical lift aircraft and related support equipment in regards to substrates and material compatibility
    • Communicate clearly and represent customer to other organizations
    • Must be able to translate complex client needs into simple, straightforward tasks
    • Must be able to conduct in-depth investigative research, interviews and data collection
    • Have excellent communication skills with appropriate internal and external contacts
    • Create forward-thinking, conceptual solutions for clients in a professional manner
    • Take initiative to launch projects and build approaches to meeting objectives with only minimal direction
    • Work effectively under deadlines and manage multiple projects with evolving requirements
    • Self-manage schedules, tasks, and the tracking and billing of time to clients
    • Can identify key problems holding up progress and develop solutions/options/recommendation


Basic Qualifications: 

    • Bachelors’ Degree in Chemistry
    • 20-25 years of CARC experience
    • Candidate must possess an active Department of Defense Top Secret Clearance
    • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen *ARAClear
    • Experience working with Federal Agencies, DoD and interagency
    • Proficiency with DoD roles and missions, and organizational structure
    • Working knowledge and understanding of DoD planning, programming and budgeting process
    • Exceptional Microsoft Office product skills
    • Ability to manage and prioritize numerous assignments
    • Organized individual, with prioritization and time management skills
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
    • He/she must be able to function in a team-oriented environment and be able to interact professionally with employees and management at all levels
