Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is looking for you to join a team of engineers working in a highly dynamic, fast-paced environment in Aurora, CO.

What You'll get to Do:

We are seeking a SATCOM Engineer with hardware, software, and integration experience to work in our Aurora, CO office.

The selected candidate will be responsible for design of SATCOM ground receiving and transmitting antenna systems and the associated RF signal chain. The candidate must have a solid understanding of end-to-end RF and microwave systems, performance modeling and link budgets. An advanced understanding of modulation techniques, encoding, error correction, noise measurement and estimation, atmospheric loss and other noise sources on signal quality is required. Prior experience with a range of common industry solutions for command, telemetry, data downlink, digital processing and forwarding is preferred. The candidate must have an advanced understanding of signal processing in both the RF/digital domain and of A/D and D/A conversions.

The candidate must be capable of conducting industry trade studies, drafting detailed vendor specifications to meet specific requirement sets and architecting end-to-end solutions incorporating a range of industry solutions for RF and digital signal processing. The candidate must be capable of independently managing suppliers of RF equipment from a technical, schedule and cost perspective.

The candidate should have experience with General Purpose Processors (servers & workstations), Storage Devices, and Network Infrastructure. The selected candidate will be responsible for technical documentation creation and review. The ability to present highly technical material to varied audiences to include executive level and highly technical experts is preferred. The candidate should be able to operate independently with little oversight in a dynamic environment and handle diverse assignments with efficiency, finding unique solutions and working in a very collaborative and fast-paced and sometimes a harsh outdoor environment. This position could require up to 25% travel.

Qualifications:

This position may be filled as either a Principal SATCOM Engineer or a Sr. Principal SATCOM Engineer

Basic Qualifications for a Principal SATCOM Engineer:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline and 5+ years of related experience; 3+ years of related experience with a Master's degree; 0 years of related experience with a PhD
  • Active Top Secret clearance, with eligibility for SCI; must be willing to submit to and able to pass a Counter Intelligence polygraph
  • Knowledge and experience with antenna theory and design including link budget analysis
  • Knowledge and experience with design and construction of antenna systems including data processing software and hardware


Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal SATCOM Engineer:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline and 9+ years of related experience; 7+ years of related experience with a Master's degree; 4+ years of related experience with a PhD
  • Active Top Secret clearance, with eligibility for SCI; must be willing to submit to and able to pass a Counter Intelligence polygraph
  • Knowledge and experience with antenna theory and design including link budget analysis
  • Knowledge and experience with design and construction of antenna systems including data processing software and hardware


Preferred Qualifications:

A strong understanding of fundamental SATCOM principles and techniques to include the following:

  • Electrical Engineering degree with specialization in communications theory
  • The ideal candidate would have detailed knowledge of the following:
    • Theory, design, and application of BPSK, QPSK, M-PSK, M-QAM, M-ary FSK, and DVB-S waveforms
    • Implementation of Forward Error Correction (FEC) schemes and their applicability to the Shannon-Hartley theorem
    • Application of ITU-R & NTIA standards in relation to SATCOM applications
  • Ability to perform Link Budget analysis on a multitude of waveforms and platforms


  • Understanding of antenna theory and design to include:


    • Antenna noise floor and how it impacts overall G/T performance
    • Reflector antennas principles to include Prime Focus and Cassegrain feed design and their applications
    • Ability to simulate antenna radiation patterns.


  • Experience with test equipment to include Spectrum Analyzers, Network Analyzers, Oscilloscopes, Bit Error Rate (BER) Testers, etc.
  • Demonstrated understanding of network protocols and their applications: TCP, UDP, etc
  • Experience installing and testing RF over fiber technology
  • Proven history of building and deploying SATCOM Terminals
  • Experience working with high speed A/D and D/A converters
  • Rack and Stack of general purpose servers, modems, and Cable Management experience
  • Deployment and Shipping experience
  • PCM Coding and Serial Protocols
  • Fundamental principles of Baseband Framing to include CCSDS and VITA-49 packet formats
  • Experience working with Crypto Units
  • Able to develop and manage system requirements
  • Experience writing proposals
  • Experience with security protocols
  • Electrical Engineering degree with focus in communication systems
  • Real world experience with C/C++, Python, MATLAB, etc.
  • Proficient with the Linux command line interfaces
  • Ability to work from elevated platforms of 8 feet or higher
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
