Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is looking for you to join our team as a Principal Human Factors Engineer/Senior Principal Human Factors Engineer based out of Redondo Beach, CA.

What you'll get to do:

The people at Northrop Grumman work on the hardest, most complex problems the world has ever seen. These complex problems require excellent user experiences, because the data is dense and overwhelming when not intentionally designed to be useful. Our users make difficult decisions and solve challenging problems that keep people around the world safe. To support our users and their missions, we have assembled a multi-disciplinary team of UX practitioners focused on building the right systems and services and in a way that work well for the users.


Below are the responsibilities of the selected candidate.

UX responsibilities:

  • Leverage UX methodologies for uncovering user needs and identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Create personas, task models, journey maps, and other UX artifacts
  • Plan and conduct rapid iterative usability testing of wireframes, mockups, and prototypes
  • Translate research findings into design recommendations to quickly improve product designs early in the design cycle
  • Work closely with software engineers to support design documentation and development needs
  • Understand and align the needs of our stakeholders, clients, and users
  • Perform validation usability testing to determine whether features and products have met mission and usability objectives
  • Actively engage stakeholders through group facilitation and working groups
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical topics as well as interface with the customer
  • Contribute to the development of standards, patterns, and guidelines that will govern UX design practices
  • Provide thought leadership towards emerging UX best practices, trends, and technologies

Systems Engineering responsibilities:

  • Performing customer requirements elicitation leading to Requirements Development
  • Supporting system level trade studies
  • Definition of high-level functional and performance requirements and verification methods, subsequent analysis, decomposition, and derivation of requirements, allocation of those lower-level requirements to physical and functional architectural elements, and tracking them through design, verification, integration, and operational validation
  • Supporting a team of engineers to create, mature and present comprehensive and cohesive technical charts representative of the appropriate level of maturation for any given milestone meeting and demonstrating team readiness in relation to achieving the milestone entrance and exit criteria
  • Identifying required contractual deliverables and non-contractual documentation and driving corresponding updates to closure
  • Coordinating and collaborating with diverse engineering design teams to assist in managing the technical baseline
  • Supporting multiple engineering insertions simultaneously while ensuring the various maturations are synchronized

This requisition may be filled at either a Principal Human Factors Engineer grade or Senior Principal Human Factors Engineer grade.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Human Factors Engineer:

  • 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline; 3 years of relevant experience with a Masters' degree; 0 years of relevant experience with a PhD
  • Active DOD Top Secret security clearance required with the ability to obtain SCI access
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles and processes
  • Proficiency in MS Office

Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Human Factors Engineer:

  • 9 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline; 7 years of relevant experience with a Masters' degree; 4 years of relevant experience with a PhD
  • Active DOD Top Secret security clearance required with the ability to obtain SCI access
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles and processes
  • Proficiency in MS Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active SCI access
