Postdoctoral Research Staff Member - Nuclear Nonproliferation & Threat Detection

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in nuclear nonproliferation, threat detection, and analysis. You will participate in the development of new detection systems and algorithms, and also implement these new technologies in actively deployed systems. This position is in the Nuclear Security Physics group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties

- Participate in the development, design, implementation, fabrication, evaluation, and analysis of new algorithms and instrumentation for the detection, classification, identification, localization and tracking of nuclear materials or objects of concern.

- Work with partners outside LLNL to deploy and test algorithms on next-generation radiation detection systems.

- Document research; report research results via publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.

- Perform other duties as assigned.


- Recent PhD in physics, astrophysics, or related field.

- Experience in Java or C++; proficient in principles of object-oriented programming and software development standard methodologies.

- Experience in developing software infrastructure for complex data analysis, and in the application of statistics, signal processing, and error propagation.

- Ability to perform independent research in experimental or theoretical science.

- Ability to find creative solutions to scientific and technical problems.

- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature with experience presenting research results to a large audience.

- Proficient verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively present and explain results of scientific research in presentations at seminars, meetings and journal publications.

Desired Qualifications

- Experience in Java, Python, MATLAB, C++, and/or SQL databases.

- Experience in Monte Carlo and/or deterministic radiation transport codes (e.g., MCNP, GEANT, etc.)

- Experience with software development tools and concepts such as github, design-patterns, and continuous integration.


Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
