We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (CAMS) to conduct research in radiation damage of materials in support of an ongoing project to study the effects of aging in plutonium. You will conduct high-energy ion implantation experiments and develop new characterization methods to understand the fundamental processes that control sample aging. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division.
Essential Duties
- Conduct creative and independent research with a multi-disciplinary team, collaborate on technique development to study radiation damage.
- Perform high-energy ion implantation experiments to produce samples for post-irradiation characterization.
- Perform post-irradiation characterization of implanted samples.
- Participate in other ion beam experiments, such as isotope production, as part of the overall activity of the CAMS ion implantation research group.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Publish results in peer reviewed literature, produce programmatic reports, and present research results at professional meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in materials science, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience with the operation and maintenance of particle accelerators and related components (e.g., ion sources).
- Experience in the application of ion irradiation techniques for materials research.
- Experience with materials characterization tools such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), focused ion beam (FIB), etc.
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research environment, both independently and as a team member.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with non-destructive material characterization methods such as a positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and time-resolved transient grating spectroscopy.
- Experience with in-situ ion beam characterization techniques such as dynamic TEM.
- Ability to apply and develop various methods for theory, simulation, and modeling of radiation damage processes and corresponding property changes in materials.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
