Postdoctoral Research Staff Member

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in materials refinement of metals and ceramic compounds. You will actively participate in researching methods for producing high purity lithium and various lithium compounds in bulk, powder and composite forms. This position is in the Functional Materials Synthesis and Integration group of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research on trace impurities in molten lithium and lithium compounds.
- Develop methods to reduce or remove impurities from these lithium materials.
- Design and perform experiments to determine solubilities, melt partitioning, precipitation and settling rates of various impurities in lithium materials.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, chemical engineering or related field.
- Understanding of the concepts of metallurgical processing: thermal processing, casting, settling, filtration, zone refinement, vacuum distillation, cold-trapping, gettering, etc.
- Experience with safe handling of hazardous and reactive materials, alkali metals, nanopowders in glove boxes and fume hoods.
- Experimental skills with proficient use of temperature-, vacuum-, and gas-controlled systems.
- Knowledgeable in a variety of trace chemical analysis methods: titration, mass spectrometry, Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Fourier-transform Infrared, X-Ray Diffraction.
- Ability to design experiments and develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge in alkali metal processing, gas atomization, die-casting of materials.
- Experience with sintering and consolidation: vacuum furnaces, hot-pressing, spark plasma sintering, isostatic pressing, etc.; mechanical testing using Instron type devices.
- Experience in neutron activation analysis, or other high energy beamline techniques.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
