Postdoctoral Research Staff Member - Advanced Biomanufacturing Group

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member within the Advanced Biomanufacturing Group. You will collaborate with a diverse team of engineers and scientists to complete research and development projects on selected topics/areas within microfabrication, additive manufacturing, microfluidics and their application to biological and other systems. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Develop novel microfluidic systems or (bio)chemical reactors for various biological applications.
- Develop integrated instrumented experimental platforms in support of answering research questions in life science.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Optimize materials for additive manufacturing processes and biocompatibility testing.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Work closely with engineers and technicians from LLNL and its sponsors in all aspects of system development.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science or related field.
- Experience with microfluidic systems, flow control at the micro and meso-scales.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer- reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Initiative, interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment .

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in cell or molecular biology, or tissue engineering, or biological assays.
- Experience with sensors.
- Experience with Matlab, Solidworks, or AutoCad.
- Experience in biomaterial characterization and optical imaging.
- Experience mentoring student researchers.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
