Postdoctoral Research Staff Member - Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (CAMS) to support an ongoing project to establish accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) capabilities for measuring transition metal activation products in nuclear debris. Your research will include developing novel sample preparation chemistry and AMS instrumentation methods, and applying AMS to national security missions, such as proliferation monitoring. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division.

Essential Duties

Conduct creative and independent research as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, collaborate in technique development and sample analysis in experimental programs in nuclear forensics.
Develop chemical protocols for extraction and purification of transition metals from nuclear debris.
- Participate in AMS runs including system operation and data analysis as part of the overall activity of the heavy isotope research group.
- Publish results in peer reviewed literature, produce programmatic reports, and present research at professional meetings.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in radio, nuclear, or analytical chemistry, or a related discipline.
- Experience with radionuclide separation methods, such as liquid-liquid extraction, ion exchange chromatography or solvent extraction.
- Experience applying low-level isotopic measurements to nuclear and environmental samples.
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research environment, both independently and as a team member.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Practical experience with accelerator mass spectrometry or similar instrumental techniques.
- Experience with transition metal chemistry.
- Experience with charged-particle and gamma-ray detectors and radiation counting and their associated data analyses.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
