Summary:
The HealthCare Polysomnographic Technician (HCPT) works under the general supervisionof the medical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation andtreatment of sleep disorders including in center and home sleep apnea testing,diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and directpatient education.
Duties andResponsibilities:
- Operatesclosed circuit television camera to observe patient during test and to recordpatient's sleep activities.
- Operatespolysomnograph equipment to record electrical activity of brain waves and otherphysiological variables and records notes on graph to eliminate fromconsideration physiological measurements caused by such activities as patientopening eyes, turning head, or turning body.
- Studiespolysomnogram to recognize arrhythmias and abnormal respiratory patterns andcalls physician or other emergency personnel if needed.
- Measuresdurations of brain waves recorded on polysomnograms, using millimeter ruler.
- Studiescharacteristics of completed polysomnogram tracings and summarizes data showingstages of sleep, abnormal breathing events, periodic leg movements,arrhythmias, and other information, applying knowledge of polysomnographtesting principles.
- Completetasks with little or no direct supervision.
- Troubleshootsleep equipment and software, as necessary.
- Meetshort-notice deadlines as established by the organization.
- Conductand score all types of sleep studies and testing modalities performed at thefacility in accordance with AASM scoring guidelines and Sleep MedicineLab/Clinic protocols.

MinimumQualifications:(To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform eachessential duty satisfactorily.)
- High School Diploma
- Minimumof one (1) year experience within the last three (3) years, conducting sleepstudies in a patient care setting including one year scoring sleep studies.
- Adhereto national certification standards as outlined by the American Academy ofSleep Medicine (AASM) and Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
- Musthave and maintain in good standing current certification by the Board ofRegistered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) as a RegisteredPolysomnographic Technologist.
- Musthave and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification throughout thelife of the contract. The American Heart Association Basic Life Support forHealthcare Providers is the only program accepted.
Knowledge, Skillsand Abilities:
- Have knowledge of clinic/departmentregulations, policies and procedures.
- Demonstratethe knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific carein the treatment, assessment and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult andgeriatric patients. This includes, but is not limited to, and underlying familiarityof common situations and conditions seen in the sleep lab such as: PAPadherence, mask leaks, mask fittings, insomnia, cognitive behavioral therapyfor insomnia (CBT-I), restless leg syndrome (RLS), anxiety/depression,nightmares, inadequate sleep time and narcolepsy.
- Havesufficient interpersonal skills and knowledge and experience to perform thespecific tasks. Maintains a professional manner and display a positive andcooperative attitude toward patients, staff, MTF personnel and others with whomthe HCPTs have contact such as, family members, other clinicians, medicalstaff, and visitors.

- While performing the duties of thisJob, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employeeis frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reachwith hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb orbalance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally liftand/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this jobinclude close vision.

- The employee will normally work ina temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure toelectronic office equipment.
- During visits to areas ofoperations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborneparticles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
