Plane Captain

Job Summary

The Plane Captain provides line services in support ofscheduled flight operations, including inspection, servicing, cleaning,launching and recovery of aircraft. Willbe required to operate self-propelled ground equipment during daily routine.Limited use of hand tools which normally include screwdrivers, flashlights andtools necessary to assist with engine rinses and aircraft washes.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Directs incoming and outgoing aircraft near terminal area orflight line to assist pilot's maneuvering of the aircraft on ground, using handor light signals or drives light truck with guiding sign; secures aircraft inparking position with blocks and stakes; operates service vehicles to replenishfuel, oil, water, waste system chemicals, oxygen, hydraulic fluid, and toremove waste.
  • Checks for fuel contamination by draining sumps and fueldrains.
  • Enters in the maintenance records description of theservicing performed.
  • Operates ground support equipment such as electrical powersupply and engine starting units.
  • Examines tires for specified air pressure and condition.
  • Removes and replaces defective tires
  • Positions and removes boarding platforms to unload or loadaircraft passengers.
  • Unloads and loads luggage and cargo, using tow truck withluggage carts.
  • Cleans exterior or interior of aircraft wings andassemblies, using glycol mixture, periodic housekeeping and fluid spills usingportable platform ladders, brushes, rags, water hose, cleaning compoundapplicator and mobile vacuum.
  • May install drag chutes or retrieve them and send them toparachute shop for repacking.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable safety and maintenancemanuals.
  • Thorough working knowledge of aircraft flight lineoperations, aircraft handling, servicing, marshaling, common hand tools andnormal operational safety requirements of the aircraft.
  • Must be able to read, write, understand, and communicate theEnglish language and follow verbal and written instruction.
Experience & Education

  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years O level aircraftmaintenance experience with at least one year of experience on one type of thefollowing listed aircraft; AV-8, T-39D, H-60, F-18 or current T/M/S atVX31.High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Shall have completed the appropriate Navy Skill SpecialtyT/M/S Class “C” school in airframes, electronics, avionics, hydraulic, or powerplants and related systems training or USMC/USCG equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be eligible to qualifyfor and able to maintain a secret level clearance.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
  • Services are primarily performed outside.
  • May be required to handle hazardous materials in performanceof assigned duties.
  • Ability to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfacesfor extended periods throughout the day.
  • Ability to climb, bend, stoop, squat, crawl, crouch, kneel,lift, carry, balance and reach above shoulder level, push or pull weight up toseventy (70) pounds.
  • Ability to use eye hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Must have close vision to include color vision, peripheralvision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to hear at the normal range.
  • May require the use of respirator.
  • Must be able to work day shift, night shift, and/or weekendshift as required.
  • As required by work and customer specifications. May requiretravel in support of detachments of unknown duration.
