Physical Scientist


SAIC is seeking a motivated, career and customer-oriented Physical Scientist to join our team at Fort Belvoir, Virginia to provide unparalleled support to our customer and to begin an exciting and rewarding career.  This position provides Advisory and Assistance Services (A&AS) to The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Nuclear Technologies Department, supporting DoD research and development efforts to improve U.S. capability to perform render safe operations (disabling a potentially yield-producing nuclear device) under time-sensitive battlefield conditions.  

The successful candidate will provide technical advice on the unconventional application of state-of-the-art interdisciplinary scientific and engineering principles to meaningfully advance the combat render safe mission.  Researches requirements, conducts market research, and translates best technology areas and concepts available across DoD, the U.S. Government, industry, and academia.  Assesses competing technical approaches and recommends new technical approaches to fill DoD capability gaps and meet operational requirements.  Provides advice and facilitates government acquisition actions by writing statements of work, evaluating proposals, and monitoring contractor performance.  Assists the government in aligning the portfolio for rapid transition of emerging tools and analytical capabilities to key end-users.


·     Required Qualifications:

  • Masters of Science plus 3 years of relevant experience or Doctorate in engineering, physics, computational science, or a related discipline. 
  • Understanding of nuclear concepts, including radiation transport; fluid dynamics; and detection
  • Experience working with some or all of the following: DoD, other Federal agencies, industry, and National and/or Service Laboratories.  
  • Ability to translate requirements and observations into clearly defined written products (briefings, reports, white papers) in short timeframes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  
  • Travel is required (10% to 25%). 
  • A DoD Top Secret clearance (or equivalent) and ability to obtain SCI access

Desired Qualifications


  • A Ph.D. in engineering, physics, computational science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with advanced nuclear weapon concepts, design, diagnostics, and physics
  • Familiarity with DoD and Intelligence Community (IC) concepts-of-operation and research, development, test and evaluation (RDTE) acquisition process
  • Current Top Secret//SCI clearance (or equivalent) is highly desired
