Payload Mixed Signal Engineer - TS/SCI Cleared


SAIC is seeking a Payload Engineer with technical expertise in spacecraft payload mixed signal circuit design, command & telemetry links, and COMSEC design & acquisition. The position is located in Chantilly, VA.

In this role, you will be an integral participant in payload mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC requirements, trades, design, performance analysis, and hardware development.  Key areas of focus include command and telemetry thread responsibilities, mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC hardware implementation evaluations, performance assessments, system impact evaluations, hardware assembly and test assessments, COMSEC security planning and certification, and COMSEC Government Furnished Equipment acquisition.  

You will thrive in this role if you have experience in the design & integration of satellite payloads and are knowledgeable of space system development and space vehicle development.  

The following tasks are representative of those that will be accomplished at the request of the customer:

  • Provide oversight of the design, production, integration and test of spacecraft payloads
  • Provide expert advice and coordination concerning mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC development
    • Serve as a payload systems engineering thread lead for the command and telemetry links thread
    • Assess feasibility of new mixed signal insertions and mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC functionality enhancements
    • Review and coordinate on changes to specifications, ICDs and system level requirements documentation pertaining to the functionality and accommodation of mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC hardware onto the satellite bus
    • Review mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC manufacturing specifications for accuracy and ensure documentation is complete and accurate
    • Review drawings, documents and procedures for mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC design, manufacturing,  integration, program planning and execution: provide comments to the contractor and/or government
    • Track development issues, significant accomplishments and upcoming events and provide weekly status updates to the customer
    • Develop models for performance evaluations and predictions as required
    • Attend mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC and payload level design reviews and program management reviews to assess design maturity, requirements compliance and to provide informed technical recommendations to the USG
    • Identify and assess emerging risks; develop and evaluate proposed burn-down plans  
    • Review prime contractor readiness to proceed into mixed signal hardware manufacturing and test
    • Provide expert advice/analysis on interface considerations for new mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC developments
    • Coordinate with payload subsystem leads, branch chiefs and division chiefs both within S&L and outward to SE&I/AP in support of new payload and payload subsystem initiatives
  • Provide support to launch and satellite on-orbit test as required by the customer
  • Attend branch meetings as appropriate at the request of the customer to coordinate support activities
  • Provide technical evaluation of payload efforts in contractor Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs)
  • Attend contractor milestone reviews (e.g. PDR, CDR, pre-test, pre-ship and other meetings) to provide technically based recommendations regarding satisfaction of mixed signal-related review entrance and exit criteria
  • Provide support to factory integration and test activities as required
  • Develop productive relationships with prime contractor counterparts, functional counterparts, and other payload and payload subsystem subject matter experts
  • Advise and mentor USG Payload personnel regarding mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC design elements


  • Active TS/SCI with Poly
  • Bachelors degree and 14 years or more professional experience
  • Experience with spacecraft mix mixed signal/telemetry & links/COMSEC design, manufacture, and test
  • Experience in DOD/IC acquisition and program management processes
  • Basic understanding of DOD/IC satellite systems and architectures
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, team building and problem solving skills with a demonstrated ability to be effective in a government/contractor team environment
  • Ability to travel domestically 

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters in Electrical Engineering 
  • Experience using Matlab
  • Experience with DOORS
