Part Time Illustrator /Technical Documentation Specialist NOAA

SAIC is recruiting for a mid-level part-time Illustrator and Technical Documentation specialist to join our program as a general technologist to support our NOAA GFDL customer in Princeton, NJ.  This individual will be working with highly technical climate scientists and must have great communication skills to respond to user requests in a user-friendly and professional manner. 

The ideal candidate must be an independent self-starter and have excellent customer-facing communication and consultation skills (with managers and/or scientists).  

 

Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Collaborate with research and technical staff to collect and interpret technical data required to prepare informational materials.  Distill relevant information and present that information in an easy to understand format using text, photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts.

  • Analyze target audience in order to create graphical products appropriate to final presentation vehicle (e.g., web, manuscript, poster) in user‐friendly, audience-appropriate language.

  • Plan, design, research, write, and edit a range of materials for use in manuscripts, presentations, posters, flyers, signs and charts, user guides and manuals, technical specifications, training materials, user policies, etc., for both print and online media, accounting for special final format/product requirements.

  • Interpret, design, lay-out and complete illustration work using appropriate computer graphics applications (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, PowerPoint, Gimp, etc.) and workstation platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux) to complete each task. Edit, re-draw, add graphical elements, and create composites of diverse scientific elements. 

  • Produce accurate final copy using a variety of printers or other output devices.  If necessary, prepare and send out digital files for publication purposes and for high quality and/or oversized color printing. Work with appropriate contacts to ensure all GPO requirements are met. Monitor and document progress of off-site print jobs.

  • Maintain log of all work in terms of “jobs”, including order date, agreed/actual completion dates, complexity level (1-4), number of individual components, hours spent (cumulative, to completion).

Qualifications

  • B.S./B.A. Technical Communications, Computer Science or related field with an emphasis on technical documentation

  • 3+ years of experience working directly in a scientific environment performing copy editing and desktop publishing activities.  

  • US Citizenship required with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance

Desired Qualifications

 

  • Excellent customer interaction, communication and follow-up skills

  • Documented proficiency in MS PowerPoint, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CAD or Corel Draw
  • Must have an artistic eye for detail and be able produce graphics from (1) hand drawn and/or notional sketches; or (2) verbally delivered ideas.    
  • Ability to comfortably multi-task and prioritize in a fast paced dynamic environment.
