Job Title: Packaging Engineer

Raytheon Company’s Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) Mechanical Engineering Directorate (MED) leads in mechanical hardware design, development and production of radar, sonar, torpedo and combat system equipment. The MED uses state-of-the-art tools, processes technology and Raytheon Six Sigma principles.

This position can be a Salary Grade G07 or Salary Grade G08 based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the positions.

Job Description:

Packaging Engineering is responsible for four major functions: Packaging development; Development of clear and concise specifications; Technical service and support assuring smooth transition relative to processes and environment; and reduction of packaging and unpacking costs relative to labor, materials, logistics, and procurement.

The individual will be responsible for the Packaging Engineering tasks performed for IDS Mechanical Engineering Directorate in the Manufacturing Engineering Department. The individual will be responsible for investigating, planning and implementing packaging solutions both for in-house material handling and for final shipping, storage and transportability, while insuring compliance to customer quality policy, contract requirements or in response to customer requests. Responsible for the protection of products during transit and storage in both protected and unprotected storage for months to several years to any location in the world. Develop packaging and preservation designs and instructions to protect vehicles, parts, electronic equipment, Radars and shelters from mechanical damage, deterioration from climate, fungus, pests, pilferage and other environmental conditions.

In support of those functions the Packaging Engineer designs packaging, generates Special Packaging Instructions (SPI), Material Handling Specifications (MH), Packaging Instructions for Vendors (PIV), and Packaging Handling Storage & Transportability Reports (PHS&T). Packaging Engineering will maintain documentation for in-process packaging, product delivery packaging, and provide floor support to packaging operators as required.

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date

Required Skills:

  • 2+ years of related experience in a manufacturing and/or packaging and shipping design support environment
  • Auto-Cad, Pro-E, Word, Excel, Power Point experience
  • Experience with process development, process flow, and cross-functional teamwork.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required

Desired Skills:

  • Solid understanding of MIL STD 2073, MIL-Std-1366 and MIL Spec materials associated with packaging and preservation design
  • Strong verbal and communication skills, interacting with other departments and suppliers.
  • Ability to lead and execute project work independently
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Familiar with MIL HDBK 304 Cushioning Requirements, ASTM D 4169 and MIL-STD-810 Packaging Drop Height requirement data
  • Demonstrate multi-task capabilities in fast paced environment.
  • Sound knowledge of preservation methods
  • Sound knowledge of shock and vibration mitigation during PHST
  • Support of Performance Oriented Packaging (POP) testing and qualification of Hazmat Package designs.
  • HAZMAT Package Design Training
  • Determine root cause and solutions to problems in an expeditious manner.
  • Highly skilled in troubleshooting, problem solving, and analysis relative to material handling and final packaging designs.
  • Understanding of Lean manufacturing and Poka-Yoke concepts as they apply to in-process material handling and final packaging solutions

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering or related technical degree
