Optical Scientist

Description

SAIC is seeking an Optical Scientist to support our operations at Eglin AFB, FL.

 

SAIC applies cutting edge science and technology, high performance computing resources and advanced laboratory technology to the problem of developing and testing advanced multi-spectral, polarimetric detecting LADAR seeker systems and components for the United States Air Force (USAF).  The successful applicant will play a key role in laboratory testing, including test design, development, construction, setup, test data collection and post test data analysis of advanced active sensor concepts and components. 

 
The successful applicant will be responsible for coordinating with the concept team on understanding the operational principles and modes of the unit under test and applying that knowledge to the construction of appropriate test hardware. 
The ability to communicate with a wide variety of subject matter experts and determine real, actionable requirements and functional designs and optical hardware is critical. 
The successful applicant will support laboratory test, including setup, debugging, operation and documentation.  
The successful applicant will be involved in the development, set up and testing of optical and laser systems, subsystems and components. 
The successful applicant will need to be able to work effectively both within a team and individually.
The successful applicant must have the ability to anticipate testing requirements and technology to act proactively to position the lab for improvement and success.
The successful applicant ideally has experience using laboratory lasers, designing/aligning test stations, data collection and analysis, experience with high speed detectors, power meters, spectrometers, polarization optics, oscilloscopes.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in science, engineering, or physics with a focus on optical principles engineering.

  • A minimum of 2+ years of experience with optical systems is required.

  • Experience with laser/LADAR development, designing, building, and testing LADAR systems is desired

  • General knowledge of optics, lasers, and polarization phenomenology.

  • Experience with numerical modeling tools such as MatLab or Mathematica, and C++ programming is desired.

  • Must be a U.S Citizen. Applicant must be qualified to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance.
