Nuclear-Mechanical Engineer/Intelligence Analyst

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Nuclear-Mechanical Engineer/Intelligence Analyst to join a multidisciplinary team conducting analysis of foreign nuclear weapon and missile technologies and their implications for the national security interests of the United States. You will analyze complex engineering and physical problems, often with incomplete technical information, using tools ranging from back-of-the-envelope application of basic physical principles to massively-parallel high performance computing. Your technical analysis will require critical thinking, integration of complex information from all sources, and the ability to prepare written threat assessments and other analytical products in support of customer objectives and mission. This position programmatically supports Global Security (GS) Principal Directorate’s Z Program and will administratively report to the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Work as an integral part of a small team of scientists and engineers to produce complex technical intelligence analysis on foreign nuclear weapon program developments for a variety of U.S. Government stakeholders in the form of both written products and oral presentations.
- Under minimal direction, conduct independent research and engineering analysis on a broadly defined set of sensitive, politically significant national security topics, to include foreign nuclear weapons and associated missile delivery systems and related emerging technologies.
- Apply advanced engineering knowledge in nuclear and mechanical systems to develop models in zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensions to analyze phenomena associated with radiation transport, radiation interaction with matter, computational fluid dynamics, fluid-structure interactions, heat transport, and mechanical-structural dynamic stress. Some problems may require advanced knowledge of high-explosive phenomena and the physics of nuclear explosions and subsequent effects.
- Apply advanced knowledge gained from significant experience in physics related to high altitude nuclear explosions (HANE) including electromagnetic pulse (EMP), fragmentation/debris, belt pumping, prompt radiation, and extended spectrum phenomena.
- Utilize advanced knowledge in nuclear system survivability including radiation hardening of ballistic missile system components and microelectronic sub-systems.
- Apply advanced knowledge in radiation transport simulation using Monte Carlo methods including radiation interaction with matter and radiation-induced damage phenomena.
- Develop computational models using finite element and/or finite volume grids and perform numerical simulations using Lagrangian, Eulerian, ALE, and/or smooth particle methods.
- Prepare written assessments, verbal briefings, and other products that communicate the findings from analytical research studies in accordance with the Office of Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) analytic tradecraft standards and requirements. Interface with program sponsors and Intelligence Community (IC) stakeholders and contribute to project and organizational goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition, at the SES.4 Level
- Contribute expert level subject matter knowledge on national security issues to inform the development of strategies and plans to meet programmatic objectives, providing highly advanced strategic technical advice to management and/or external customers.
- Represent the organization as the primary technical contact on multiple intelligence related tasks and projects, working efficiently with conflicting priorities.
- Act as a Principal Investigator (PI) on one or more ongoing projects, leading a small team of scientists and engineers to support programmatic objectives and regularly interfacing with management and customers to ensure the highest quality, timely deliverables.

- Master’s degree in nuclear/mechanical engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: radiation transport, computational fluid dynamics, nuclear vulnerability and hardening, HANE/EMP, solid modeling, ballistic missile defense technologies, high explosive phenomena, nuclear criticality.
- Significant experience developing and running numerical simulations and familiarity with a variety of computing platforms.
- Experience providing solutions to complex problems that require in-depth analysis of tangible and intangible factors.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information to colleagues, management, or sponsors.
- Significant experience and demonstrated ability to lead independent work.
- Ability to keep abreast of and perform complex technical assessments of emerging and over-the-horizon technologies potentially related to nuclear threats, including for example, super- and hypersonic missile system developments, directed energy weapons, compact nuclear propulsion systems, cyber systems, and space/satellite-based nuclear technologies.
- Ability to develop and manipulate 3-D engineering models using commercial solid modeling and/or grid-generation software, including experience importing/exporting CAD geometry between CAD software and engineering/physics analysis codes.
- Ability and strong willingness to challenge oneself by learning new fields in engineering and physics, including topics related to nuclear weapon design, weaponization engineering, and the physics of nuclear explosives.

In addition, at the SES.4 Level
- Expert level experience and demonstrated track record of successfully developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex multidisciplinary problems and leading corrective actions when necessary.
- Subject matter expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas: radiation transport, computational fluid-dynamics, nuclear vulnerability and hardening, HANE/EMP, solid modeling, ballistic missile defense technologies, high explosive phenomena, nuclear criticality.
- Expert communication skills, written and oral, including the ability to clearly communicate highly advanced technical information to diverse audiences.

Desired Qualifications:
- PhD degree in nuclear/mechanical engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience, and extensive experience championing, leading, and developing innovative principles, theories, and concepts.
- Expert in numerical simulation including multiphysics codes.
- Experience working with or within the intelligence, military, or policy making communities analyzing complex national security issues to including one or more of the following: foreign nuclear weapon programs, ballistic missile defense, cyber, space, or emerging technologies.


Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.  Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.  Please note that your current active Q or Top Secret clearance with DOE or another agency does not guarantee DOE SCI access approval; if you are denied access, you may be subject to reinvestigation of your existing Q or Top Secret clearance.
