NIF Master Oscillator Room (MOR) Technologist

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a National Ignition Facility (NIF) Master Oscillator Room (MOR) Technologist.   The MOR is a fiber-optic based laser system which generates the initial laser light that is used to perform large scale physics experiments in the NIF.   You will deploy and maintain moderately complex fiber-optic based electro-optic systems for the MOR and related facilities.  Job assignments will include making independent decisions with general guidance on the state-of-the-art fiber-optic designs, electronic data acquisition systems and collaborating with scientists, engineers and high-level technical personnel. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 531.2 or 531.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Apply general engineering principles for the development of MOR designs, including, collaborating with stakeholders in the development of requirements and work plan activities, hardware prototypes, instrumentation performance evaluation, documentation, installation, commissioning, and system performance verification.
- Troubleshoot and repair existing electro-optic assemblies in a timely manner to ensure continuous operation of NIF and other moderately complex technical tasks.
- Interact with a distributed computer system for the control and maintenance of the NIF MOR.
- Under general supervision acquire, analyze and interpret diagnostics data for troubleshooting and repairing issues within the NIF MOR.
- Provide on-call support as required to ensure 24/7 NIF operations.
- Develop & improve processes and procedure for new and existing MOR systems to increase the efficiency of NIF operations.
- Work with Physics and Engineering staff to modify the MOR configuration to support NIF shot requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 531.3 Level
- Provide advanced technical support, analyze complex system data, document test results, identify complex problems, and provide regular formal reports to review teams.
- Establish and modify guidelines, techniques and procedures, develop formal training documents (Qualification Cards, one-lines, basic schematics etc.), establish appropriate work methods and set priorities.
- Lead daily work scope activities and develop a safe plan of action.

- Associate’s degree in Electronics or Lasers & Electro-Optics, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience using test equipment including oscilloscopes, DMMs, TDR’s, and spectrum analyzers.
- Experience reading moderately complex mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Demonstrated comprehensive problem solving, troubleshooting, decision making, and analytical skills necessary to independently anticipate, analyze, advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions to moderately complex issues.
- Intermediate skills and knowledge of electronic mixed signal circuitry and embedded systems.
- General electronics background in both theory and design while applying the knowledge of electronics, software, instrumentation and controls, or electro-optic theory and ability to solve circuitry or system challenges.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Ability to climb stairs, lift equipment, or stand for long periods of time.
In Addition at the 531.3 Level
- Advanced skills and experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of complex technical problems.
- Experience programming embedded controllers.  Advanced understanding and experience in electronics technology and background in both theory and design and ability to apply electronic knowledge to a breadth of electronic circuits and systems.

Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Physics, Electronics, or Electrical Engineering.
- Experience planning and directing work with technical objectives, estimating effort, setting milestones, and managing within designated budget.
- Experience measuring signal bandwidths > 1GHz for electro-optic optic systems.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
