Network Systems Engineer

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Network Systems Engineer to design, implement and support advanced network infrastructure across multiple discreet networks for the Field Intelligence Element (FIE).  You will also be responsible for implementing network security policies, monitoring network infrastructures, and responding to network related incidents. In addition to your primary role as a network administrator, you will be responsible for assisting with deployment and support of VTC’s, Cisco Unified Communications, Windows servers, Windows desktops and peripherals.  This position is in the Information Technology Operations (ITO) Division, matrixed to the Global Security (GS) Computer Support Unit (CSU) within the Computation Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the 393.1 or 393.2 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties                                                             
- Provide advanced architectural, operational, and troubleshooting support for WAN and LAN services and equipment.
- Responsible for firewall and network security configurations.
- Specify, configure, install monitoring tools and network automation for multiple discreet networks.
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement network solutions and equipment to meet customer requirements.
- Collaborate with management, customers, and team members to ensure completion of project deliverables.
- Install, upgrade and configure computer system hardware including network devices, Windows servers and desktops, printers and other peripherals.  
- Ensure compliance by securing and documenting installed systems and devices.
- Document, communicate and present network designs and modifications to network team, customers, sponsors and cyber security team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 393.2 Level
- Design advanced, customized networks, collaborating with customers and sponsors.
- Diagnose and resolve complex network and windows systems problems.
- Develop complex security, monitoring, and management solutions for program specific needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and related experience.
- Extensive experience with Cisco technologies, such as firewalls, routers, switches or fiber channels switches with Cisco Operating Systems: IOS, IOSXE, IOSXR and NXOS.
- Significant experience with network system design, configuration, implementation, and operation.
- Experience with secure network technologies, network management tools, and/or encryption devices.
- Comprehensive knowledge of common networking, routing and management protocols.
- Effective verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work independently and interact with a multi-disciplinary staff in a team environment.
- Ability to occasionally work outside normal business hours to provide support for network security.
In Addition at the 393.2 Level
- Ability to document network architectures and solutions.
- Significant experience troubleshooting network capacity and performance problems.
- Substantial experience solving problems by analyzing protocol interactions collected in packet traces, and working independently to resolve problems, develop original solutions, and configure network monitoring tools and network management tools.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
