Description

Job Title: Sr. Network Engineer

Location: Pentagon, Arlington, VA

Shift: N/A 

Required Security Clearance: Top Secret

Required Certifications: 8570 compliance DoD IAT Level II, i.e. Security +CE, + Vendor certification such as Cisco or Juniper.

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work experience.

Education/Experience Substitutions

The following presents the allowable substitutions based on education and experience:

  • Four (4) years' experience (in addition to minimum experience requirements) may be substituted for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Two (2) years' experience (in addition to minimum experience requirements and Bachelor's degree) may be substituted for a Master's degree.
  • Two (2) years' experience (in addition to minimum requirements and Master's degree) may be substituted for a Ph.D.
  • For categories where a Bachelor's degree is required, a Master's degree may be substituted for two (2) years' experience; or a doctoral degree may be substituted for three (3) years' experience.
  • Successful completion of each course in specialized or emerging technology (Windows 2000/XP, Oracle, Powerbuilder, Web development, internet/intranet security, and XML, etc.) may be substituted for one year of experience

Required Experience: 

Must have eight or more years’ directly related experience in all phases of systems engineering. Also requires advanced knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used in all phases of the engineering, application, and development of multiple operating systems; knowledge of or certification in Cisco Systems or Juniper Networks is required.

  • Detailed knowledge and experience with the following technologies OSPF, MPLS, VRF’S, BGP, VLANS, SPANNING-TREE, IPSEC, GRE, VRRP, HSRP, DHCP, DNS
  • Detailed knowledge and experience with Cisco routers and switches
  • Detailed knowledge and experience with Juniper routers and switches
  • Knowledge and experience with firewall operation / processing
  • Knowledge and experience with load balancing technologies
  • Knowledge and experience with TYPE-1 encryption devices such as TACLANE’s
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with subnetting
  • Knowledge and experience with different media types such as CAT-5, CAT-6, single-mode, multi-mode, MTRJ, SC, ST, LC
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of network diagramming, both logical and physical

Description:                                                    

The Senior Network Engineer role is to provide advanced network design and planning, including data and voice network services.

Functional Responsibility:

  • Support internal engineering groups with the installation of hardware and configuration changes.  To include troubleshooting Layer 2 and Layer 3 issues. 
  • Troubleshoot OSPF, BGP, VRRP, VLAN creation, MSTP, port configuration for JSP customers.
  • Develop Juniper router and Cisco switch configurations to meet customer requirements and JSP standards.  These are usually request’s from Projects but sometimes requests come direct JSP customers or internal engineering groups within JSP.
  • Develop Engineering Installation Plans (EIP).  Follow through on the project from start to finish while following all of the JSP Change Management procedures and Engineering reviews.  Meet all scheduled milestones and completion dates.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hardware issues with Juniper and Cisco routers and switches.
  • Knowledge of TCPdump and packet capture and analysis.
  • Troubleshoot with customers complex router and switching issues via conference calls.
  • VPN creation, modification, and troubleshooting.

In addition:

  • Implement and troubleshoot site-to-site VPNs on Cisco routers.
  • Implement and troubleshoot VRRP, OSPF, BGP, and EVPN  on Juniper routers.
  • Troubleshoot routing issues on Juniper and Cisco routers.
  • Implement and troubleshoot Layer 2 (MSTP, PVST, port configuration, trunks) on Juniper switches and various Cisco models.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Juniper and Cisco router and switch hardware issues.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve host connectivity issues (end-to-end),
  • Able to use network sniffers (IPsec VPN, GRE, TCP dump network traffic analysis, Wireshark network traffic analysis, and DMVPN)
  • Verify subnet usage by reviewing routing tables.
  • Locate a host switch port given the MAC and/or the IP address.
  • Create router and switch configs per the organization’s standards.
  • Work within the organizations guidelines and policies. 
  • Support Authorized Services Outages (ASI's) by implementing and troubleshooting configs. ASI's generally occur during evening hours.
  • Create and implement EIPs.
  • Work with and support internal groups within the organization (Projects, EMS, SSB, DNS, etc.).

Qualifications:

  • Active Top-Secret security clearance
  • Must be proficient in Juniper and Cisco routers and switches
  • Current 8570 Level II certification (Security+ CE) or higher
  • Must have at least 4 years of directly related experience in network analysis and administration.
  • Hands-on experience with design, development and implementation of data, voice, and/or video communications networks.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills

Preferences:

  • Experience in a large-scale ISP network, preferred.

Working Conditions:

Work is typically based in a busy office environment and subject to frequent interruptions. Business work hours are normally set from Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm, however some extended or weekend hours may be required. Additional details on the precise hours will be informed to the candidate from the Program Manager/Hiring Manager.

Physical Requirements:

May be required to lift and carry items weighting up to 25 lbs. Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching and bending throughout the work day.

Background Screening/Check/Investigation:

Active Top-Secret Clearance is required.
