The scope of the Scientific, Research and Administrative Support Effort is to provide support to National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), Viral Gastroenteritis Branch (VGB) within the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The DVD prevents disease, disability, and death through immunization and by control of respiratory, enteric, and related viral diseases.


The Viral Gastroenteritis Branch (VGB) is responsible for (1) providing epidemiologic and laboratory assistance studies and related activities to better understand the evolution, (molecular) epidemiology and immunity of rotavirus, norovirus and other gastroenteritis viruses; (2) providing consultation on the safety and impact of rotavirus vaccination and other prevention programs (rotavirus, norovirus); (3) providing consultation and technical assistance to state and local health departments to monitor the burden of disease and epidemiology of gastroenteritis virus infections (rotavirus, norovirus); (4) providing consultation and support on the research and development of new rotavirus vaccines and other prevention technologies; (5) providing consultation and support and/or participates in investigations of national and international outbreaks of viral vaccine preventable and other enteric viral diseases, and recommends appropriate control measures; (6) providing scientific leadership and advice, analyzes available data, and develops science-based statements for rotavirus vaccines to the ACIP and other groups to support the development and evaluation of immunization practices and policies in the U.S and internationally; provides and supports public health training; (7) responding to and assisting internal and external partners on other public health problems of national and international significance, as needed; (8) serving as the National Reference Laboratory (rotavirus and norovirus) and other agents of viral gastroenteritis; (9) serving as the WHO Global Reference Laboratory for Rotavirus and other agents of viral gastroenteritis.


The contractor will apply specialized skills to conduct laboratory work including one or multiple of the following tasks:

  • Perform molecular virology studies (detection and typing and high-level characterization) on viral gastroenteritis viruses including rotavirus or norovirus and sapovirus
  • Evaluate multi-enteric pathogen diagnostic platforms for the detection of viruses, bacteria and parasites
  • Participate in burden of disease studies of rotavirus or norovirus outbreaks, sporadic cases and birth cohorts
  • Leading studies to evaluate novel diagnostic platforms for the detection and/or typing of gastroenteritis viruses
  • Design and perform animal work to support immunology and vaccine projects
  • Attend weekly team meetings, annual meetings, and other ad hoc meetings when necessary to provide information on current activities or to become familiar with current activities
  • Responsible lead author on abstract and peer-review publications from above mentioned projects and studies.

  • Masters of Science degree plus at least 5 years of relevant experience OR Ph.D./Doctoral Degree in microbiology, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, or related field; OR equivalent work experience
  • Willingness to travel: as required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position
  • Knowledge of CDC laboratory policy, quality and regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality systems and general microbiology/biology
  • Knowledge of basic computer and inventory software functions
  • Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of documentation for equipment calibration and validation
  • Must be United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States
  • Must have current Hepatitis B vaccination (and Hepatitis A vaccination is highly encouraged)



  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize new research ideas for project research
  • Demonstrated skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts


  • Doctoral degree in microbiology, biology, biotechnology, chemistry
  • Previous experience working in a similar role
  • Previous experience working overseas


Work will be performed in a climate controlled office environment.
