Mgr III Mechanical Engrg

This position is the Section Manager for Space Systems Mechanical Engineering Section and is responsible for leading a group of mechanical engineers for programs reporting to the Hardware Center’s Space Systems Electro-Optical (EO) Mechanical Engineering Department. This position also serves as a Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer for the department and programs, often serving as an Integrated Product Team Lead (IPTL) or Responsible Engineering Authority (REA) on Space EO programs. The Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer is responsible for establishing key components of space sensors to develop new products, processes, standards, or operational plans. The engineer must also create improvements of processes, systems or products to effectively influence new designs for productibility and establish strong communication lines between multi-cross functional teams including external customers or vendors.

In this role the engineer will typically manage a functional team of opto-mechanical engineers supporting the development of complex EO sensors and subassemblies. The role requires a management knowledge base and must possess expertise in EO sensor design and mechanical engineering as well as a general understanding of other areas and disciplines.

The Section Mgr is responsible for understanding design requirements, assembly and test procedures and processes, and cPDM system. The position requires experience in detailed design with knowledge of AI&T and production. This engineering leader oversees the work products of opto-mechanical engineers supporting concept, detailed design, and sub-assembly builds of EO space products. The EO Mechanical Engineering team works closely with the sensor design team, manufacturing engineering, and systems engineering and is expected to support the engineering development team from conceptual design phases through preliminary and critical design, build, test and delivery of complex Electro-Optical Sensors.
Position is with the EO Sensor Design department in El Segundo, California.

Required Skills:
  • At least 10 years of professional experience
  • Hands on experience in Electro-Optical mechanical design
  • CAD software, especially Creo
  • Geometric Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Project leadership experience
  • Able to present to customer
  • Maintain positive customer and supplier relationships
  • Thorough knowledge of the department’s products and technologies
  • Detailed knowledge of bidding processes
  • Working knowledge of EVMS, IMS, & IMP tools for managing programs
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong judgment and decision making abilities
  • Able to effectively work multiple tasks and priorities
  • Strong advocate for process improvement (e.g. CMMI and R6s)
  • Able to develop plans to demonstrate continuous improvement in out-of-phase defects, reduction in development costs and reduction in productivity variability using statistical methodologies
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access US only data systems.
  • Clearance required within 1st year AND role requires access to US only data
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.
Desired Skills:
  • Hands on experience in Space Electro-Optical Mechanical design and AI&T
  • Microsoft Project
  • Prior experience in DoD or Aerospace
  • Already possess a TS/SSBI security clearance
  • Ability to travel, if required
Required Education:
  • A Bachelor's degree (BA, BS) or equivalent, in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Prefer to also have a Master's degree

This position requires a U.S. person or the ability to obtain an Export Authorization from the appropriate government agency for non-U.S. persons.
