Mechanical Technologist/Sr. Mechanical Technologist

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Mechanical Technologist/Sr. Mechanical Technologist. You will apply fundamental knowledge in support of LLNL’s Enhanced Capability for Sub-Critical Experiment (ECSE) efforts. You will provide general technical support for experimental research, prototype equipment development, installation, and commissioning primarily for a wide variety of high-voltage, high-current, and fast-switching pulse power research and development projects. The ECSE effort encompasses multiple DOE (Department of Energy) Management and Operating (M&O) contractors and industry partners. Some travel may be required.  This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 533.2 or 533.3 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Machine components using conventional lathe, mill and other manufacture process machines.
- Design mechanical components using computer aided drafting (CAD) solid modeling program to produce sub-assemblies and detailed drawings.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and high-level personnel to provide general technical support to various programmatic tasks.
- Work from drawings and verbal/written instructions to assemble and test various mechanical designs.
- Acquire and analyze moderately complex data, report results, and identify problems.
- Apply a general knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in the solution of mechanical problems.
- Provide general technical support for a wide variety of laboratory activities, including, mechanical systems, cryogenics, vacuum, electrical, and plumbing/cooling installations.
- Follow and adhere to written, operational, and safety procedures in the course of completing job assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the 533.3 Level
- Acquire and analyze complex data and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex mechanical problems using individual creativity and judgment.
- Apply advanced knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in the solution of mechanical problems.
- Provide advanced technical support for a wide variety of laboratory activities, including mechanical systems, cryogenics, vacuum, electrical, and plumbing/cooling installations.

Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in an engineering technology such as mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing, or an equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Experience operating CAD software design program.
- Experience machining, mechanical fabricating and assembly, and de-bugging systems in the solution of mechanical problems.
- Intermediate knowledge of engineering hardware design and testing processes.
- Intermediate knowledge of operating principles used in vacuum and cryogenic technologies.
- Intermediate knowledge of electronic principles, components, and operation.
- Experience with personal computers and associated software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Effective written, verbal and presentation skills necessary to communicate tactfully and effectively. Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

In Addition, at the 533.3 Level
- Significant experience with mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing systems including machining, mechanical assembly, optical metrology, and de-bugging systems in the solution of mechanical problems.
- Advanced knowledge of operating principles used in vacuum and cryogenic technologies.
- Significant experience prioritizing and resolving complex technical issues.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience operating a numerical control mill and lathe.
- Advanced knowledge of cryogenic systems and material properties.
- Experience planning large mechanical fabrication and assembly projects.

 

 

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to LLNL as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
