Mechanical Technologist/Sr. Mechanical Technologist

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Mechanical Technologist/ Sr. Mechanical Technologist. You will support the Passive Remote Sensing Group (PRS) within Z Program of the Global Security (GS) Directorate. The group provides expertise supporting ground and aircraft based infrared hyperspectral imaging sensors. You will perform a combination of technical duties providing support to the engineering team solving problems in national security.You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, designers and technicians dedicated to research in the area of remote sensing. This position will report programmatically to the PRS Program Leader or his designee, and administratively report to the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 533.2 or 533.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Apply intermediate technical knowledge to the design of moderately complex sensor payloads using CREO Pro-E.
- Use of a benchtop video measuring system, assemble small intricate subassemblies.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, and outside vendors to solve moderately complex technical problems, working from drawings and verbal/written instructions, under general supervision.
- Deliver and install sensor payloads packages to various customer locations.
- Apply intermediate knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in the solution of moderately complex mechanical problems.
- Provide general technical support for a wide variety of laboratory activities, including cryogenic systems, vacuum, electrical, and plumbing/cooling installations.
- Work with LLNL and outside local machine shops to create practical hardware designs, obtain cost and schedule estimates, and follow through to insure parts are fabricated in accordance with CAD models.
- Under general supervision, improvise and overcome unanticipated obstacles while adhering to safe work practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the 533.3 Level
- Provide advanced technical support to the Passive Remote Sensing Group by solving complex technical problems and originating, preparing, and conducting technical presentations .
- Independently deploy, fabricate, troubleshoot, assemble, and disassemble complex electro-mechanical components and systems, including the planning and selection of materials, equipment, and methods; possibility with lead technician authority.
- Provide advanced mechanical/electronic support and hands-on operations through the design and assembly of complex components and systems based upon specifications from engineers, physicists, or facility personnel.

- Associate’s degree in mechanical/engineering technology or equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
- Experience handling multiple moderately complex projects and ability to leverage through working with others effectively.
- Experience performing unique fabrications and modifications of highly specialized parts and subassemblies.
- Intermediate knowledge of engineering design, fabrication, assembly techniques and materials, material properties, and manufacturing methods.
- Ability to read and follow moderately complex engineering notes, sketches, drawings specifications, and procedures.
- Experience with personal computers and associated software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Effective verbal, written, feedback and presentation communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.

In Addition, at the 533.3 Level
- Significant experience working independently on technical assignments and proven ability to meet project requirements and deadlines.
- Advanced technical skills and understanding of relevant technologies, processes and engineering principles; including engineering design, fabrication, assembly techniques, materials, material properties, and manufacturing methods.
- Significant experience managing multiple assignments and/or tasks utilizing good project management and coordination techniques under minimal supervision, and in projecting complete design cycle function time for complex multi-disciplined projects.


Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. 


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
